Of course when I said confidence it doesn't mean you go right straight to your female classmates and say "how are you, my name is so and so".

Use brains. Find way to speak to them without making your intention felt. Like if you doing class project - ask female teammates about project or make conversation. You know what I mean. Basically find good excuse to start conversation. Join CCA with girls partipating. Only then you can find excuse to make friends. Don't make friend out of the blue. Girls are very suspicious lot. They think your intention not genuine. Make sure you are genuine. And again - be confident. Don't think negative.
