It depends on what you are looking at when talking about what is expensive and what is not.
As an example....cabs. taking a taxi in sin is compared to european countries extremly cheap. taking a cab for a 10 min ride costs in germany,uk or denmark arround 40S$ therefore alcoholic beverages are in the uk and germany pretty cheap while it is damn expensive in sin....
SIN may be above average living expenses but there are def. way more expensive countries.
well there was an article stating how singapore is one of the most expensive cities to live in the world. sigh :(
Rental is very expensive in Singapore and looking for cheap short term storage space in Singapore is a headache/nightmare as there are so many different types available and most are quite expensive..
I have compared tons of it and the one that suit me the most in terms of budget and flexibility is payu storage. I paid less than $100 for almost 50 Toyoga boxes of my household and kids stuff without stepping out of our premises.
Have been storing with them for 3 mths now and so far so good and will update here.
I have compared it against the following to find the cheapest yet can provide pickup service

to anyone think Singapore is the most expensive city for commoners, ask yourself the very same question: are other cities like new york cheaper then the things you are buying everyday?
any article or index that rank Singapore as the most expensive city has to be looked at carefully. what does the article or index use to calculate which cities are the most expensive.
since every city is different, it is difficult to use the same method to calculate. a lot of index include the cost of car into the calculation. cars in singapore is way more expensive then other countries so even though our daily cost is lower, the index or article will rank us higher and reader will think that Singapore is indeed more expensive even though the things we buy is actually a lot cheaper.
for eg:
other cities:
cost of goods:$5000
cost of car:$5000
total: $10,000
Singapore:
cost of goods:$100
cost of car:$9,900
total:$10,000
base on the example, Singapore is as expensive as other cities but in fact our cost of goods is 50 times cheaper.
the index or article could also be calculating items that expat buys like things that are luxury and imported from their home country. then the index has nothing to do with us.
very expensive

Boring place.
I've lived in UK and now live in Singapore. Want to return there someday.
I'm not saying Singapore not good. Both has it own merits to be honest. I just prefer it there because i like space. I value having my own transport. I also want less stressful education for my kid. I also enjoy cooking. Buying groceries and cooking is cheap.
People prefer the relative safety in Singapore and don't like all the strikes and protest stuff. I think its alright too. People like the food and the relatively lower cost of eating out here.
Some think welfare, pensions and high taxes is for everyone's benefit. (or is often abused) Others think CPF and personal savings are a better idea. (or CPF is a scam)
At the end of the day, it is your mindset and what you value more.
.
yes it is very
No end to the level of high costs.
is expansive like all other big city.
I agree. Many places are more expensive than Singapore. Middle class in SG is the same as middle class anywhere else in the developed world.
:D
go malaysia, and you will find sg is damn ex
You know, I'm not too sure if Singapore is too expensive. But my chicken rice has been shrinking over the last few years....
SingaporeLeopolis not same...
middle class here spends 400k for a lifetime of 4 cars...10years each..
middle class everywhere else spends 1/4 the amount over a lifetime...
money better spent on other things...
well, before anyone shoots me, we can always not have a car..
so lets not have chicken rice too since its becoming expensive..and the same goes to all other things...
we can live without many things and cycle everywhere we go
Totally agree that cost of living is getting high especially when dealing with big companies.
I just shifted out of my self storage.... not to mention name after they increase my fees.....shocked that it happened when rental is actually dropping currently and I was a longtime customer...... and it was like a 20% increase......... .
Anyway, it was a hectic week forcing me to look around for cheaper ones......... and luckily with many new apps and social media........ it turns out a blessing in disguise..... the new one i found, I am currently paying 1/2 of what I paid previously and I do not even need to place any deposit, admin fees, insurance and all the hassles.
Maybe economy is getting bad so there are some small players willing to provide fantastic service at a cheap price.... who says you cant get it cheap and good in Singapore, but you need time to source quite hard though.
I got mine after browsing some apps and reading the feedbacks from other satisfied customers...........I am glad everything is over and hope it helps others who are facing the same frustration as me......the boss is very straight forward
Came over to my self storage to assess and deliver empty boxes to me at nominal fee ..... gave me a quote on the spot and I immediately sign an agreement with a small reservation fee, came back subsequently to collect my barang when my lease expires with the self storage company. , made payment, their movers move the stuff out, I make the balance payment and I did not even need to travel down to the storage.
That evening, an inventory list and a snap photo of my stuff was emailed to me Thinking back, I should have start sourcing when they increased my rent 6 mths back and would have moved out long ago if I knew earlier.
The minor difference is no 24hrs access which I do not actually use it previously (I must have accessed 5-6 times over the last year and the new storage facility allow me 2 x access mthly which is good enough for me.
So fed up with my old storage co., I tarik a few of my friends also using my previous self storage facility to this new facility. You can check them out here, Eddy is very helpful and friendly chap..
Found them here https://carousell.com/escorp/ and read through the FAQ in their website http://payu-storage.blogspot.sg/
