.
So many new posters every day.
honestly it depends on ur std of living. i can still get the $2-$3 char kuay and chicken rice at hawker center.
Things getting very expensive. Just ate a plate of mixed vegetable rice for $4.90 at a sub-urban coffeeshop. One fish and 2 veggies. Also had a cuppa hot black coffee at Tiong Bahru Plaza Kopitiam for $2.80 a few mths ago. Don't understand why so expensive?
We need to be cheaper better faster.
Taxis are cheap here compared to London, New York and Tokyo. Here is a comparison of a 3 km taxi ride in 72 major cities.
http://www.priceoftravel.com/555/world-taxi-prices-what-a-3-kilometer-ride-costs-in-72-big-cities/
As you can see from the link, a 3 km taxi ride in Singapore can cost as much as US$6.45 in Singapore. Compare that to US$12 in New York, US$14.75 in London and US$15.66 in Tokyo.
As for food, the easiest comparison is McDonalds Big Mac meal which is sold around the world. Here is the comparison study:
http://www.humuch.com/prices/McDonalds-Big-Mac-Meal/______/518#.VDDq1fmSySo
USA US$4.8 - $6.71
UK US$6.81
Japan US$8.19
The link did not give the cost of a Big Mac in Singapore. It's been a long time since I had a Big Mac. But I think the price for a Big Mac meal is about S$6. This is about US$5. So I think food here is also cheaper.
Definitely not as bad as other developed countries.
However if people only want to compare against Malaysia, Indonesia or even Thailand Vietnam etc... Then of course living in Singapore is pure misery isn't it..
I think it's good and bad... not a very financial person but I heard from some financial planner friends that Singapore's medical insurance is counted as way lesser than other countries. And i agree that daily neccessity like food in other countries cost alot. When I went to australia for army training, i recalled i got lost, lol, and i took a cab for 4 minutes it already costs $11 aussie bucks.
Recently PM lee said about we need about 2k monthly to live, but in 20 years time when our babyboomers really retired, that 2k will worth a lot lesser... Maybe the cost isn't much of a concern... maybe we're not too exposed into financial planning. I'm not doing that, but after reading Robert Kiyosaki cashflow quadrant it really gets me started thinking.
it definetly is
I think this is a case of "can afford or not" kind of thing. No one is destined to be poor from the day that they were born, so it's up to one to make life "affordable".
I find that Singaporeans are too negative about everything in Singapore.. I'm living in Australia at the moment and I realized it's even more expensive than Singapore. Even though you earn higher salary, you have to pay higher income tax as well. Also, don't forget about the high cost of living in australia. I also find that when some Singaporeans compare Singapore to other developed countries, they only look at the money those people in other countries earn and the money Singaporeans earn. These people then claim that it is soooo much better to live in those countries. It's safe to assume that these people may not have experienced what it's like living in other countries before. If you are planning to migrate, you have to factor in the lifestyle, infrastructure, weather, and other things. Some Singaporeans come to these countries expecting it to be so "happening" like what they usually see in Hollywood movies. I know one Singaporean guy who had a rude cultural shock when he saw the shops in Sydney closed at 5pm.. He actually said to me "why they close so early one?" Let me remind you that this happened in the Sydney CBD and not some rural areas. He came to Sydney because he was lured by the work-life balance that people always mention when they talk about living in Australia. Actually, there is no work-life balance here. Even though you finish your work at 4 or 5pm, you should not forget that many others also finish at the same time as you do. So, you might only find some Asian restaurants, cafes and supermarkets open and be bored out of your ass because you have nothing else to do.
Those ranking systems that have been going around touting SG as one of the most expensive places are not wrong, but those are mostly due to the high price of houses and cars in our country.
We should all be glad that we can still find relatively cheap food, take public transport without much hassle, go home at 12am without any worries, and enjoy a decent medical coverage as compared to countries like America.
agree with Nigganun.
certain not as expensive..there are other countries which are worse than SG, but of coz there are more countries that are having living standards which are cheaper than us..haha!
We r too used to the prices
Sg getting too expensive.
