Unemployed man jailed for making bomb hoax call

  AN UNEMPLOYED man was jailed for six months and two weeks on Wednesday for making a bomb hoax call and disorderly behaviour.

  Teng Boon Piew, 50, who pleaded guilty, made a false call to the police on Aug 8 that he suspected a bomb or terrorist(s) at the back of a taxi.

  A Community Court heard that as a result, eight police cars were despatched to verify the information, causing unnecessary drainage of police resources.

  Several taxis bearing the plate number given were also stopped and checked for the presence of any bombs. But police investigations did not reveal anything suspicious.

  The court heard that earlier on June 27, Teng appeared to be drunk and was shouting at Bedok North Neighbourhood Police Centre.

  When he was told to leave, he became violent and even threatened to jump down from the nearest block.

  Teng, who had previous convictions for disorderly behaviour, could have been fined up to $50,000 and/or jailed for up to seven years for making the bomb hoax call.

  For disorderly behaviour, he could have been fined up to $2,000 or jailed for up to six months.

  Perhaps he is dissappointed not given the maximum 7 yrs of free meals and lodging.
