Prof. Robert Deng of Singapore Management University Named 2010 ISLA "Community Service Star" and Showcased Senior Information Security Professional
SINGAPORE, July 27 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- (ISC)2(R) ("ISC-squared"), the not-for-profit global leader in educating and certifying information security professionals throughout their careers with over 70,000 certified members worldwide, announced four distinguished information security workforce initiatives led by the most outstanding honorees at its fourth annual Asia-Pacific Information Security Leadership Achievements (ISLA) Gala Dinner and Ceremony last night in Singapore. The Guest of Honor, Mr. Chan Yeng Kit, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Information for the Communications and the Arts in Singapore, also attended the event to support and congratulate the honorees.
Professor Robert H. Deng, professor and associate dean for Faculty and Research School of Information Systems, Singapore Management University, was recognized as "Community Service Star", a new ISLA special recognition. "Community Service Star" was added this year to the ISLA Program to recognize an honoree who has significantly contributed to building or broadening security awareness within their community.
"The ISLA Nomination Review Committee (NRC) selected Prof Deng to be honored with the recognition because of his significant contribution to the information security community through his work on information security and sharing of that knowledge and expertise to promote safety and security for Internet users. Prof Deng advocates for industry education and standards through his participation in information security education and training to professionals across the region, as well as through his volunteer work with various information security standards committees to keep infocomm security up to date with the latest demands and technologies," said Freddy Tan, CISSP, member of NRC and vice chairperson, Board of Directors, (ISC)2.
Prof. Deng was also recognized as one of the showcased honorees in the Senior Information Security Professional category. Prof. Deng has dedicated the last two decades of his career to security engineering and research. He was recognized for his innovative application of security techniques in the real world.
"As information technology continues to reach into every corner of our lives, the digital age also raises serious concerns about information security," said Prof. Deng. "The most vital sectors of our economy -- manufacturing, telecommunication, banking and finance, transportation and emergency service -- are potentially susceptible to disruptions by individual and organized hackers and cyber terrorists. There is an imperative need for more research on information security, for applying state-of-the-art information security techniques in the real world and for heightening the information security awareness of Internet users. I am very happy that my colleagues and I have contributed to these efforts. The recognition and award by (ISC)2 is an encouragement for me to further my research and outreach activities."
The other showcased honoree for the Senior Information Security Professional category was Mr. Dong Hoon Park, CEO, NICS Tech Co., South Korea. Mr. Park was honored for playing a pivotal role in the industry by collecting the opinions of industry leaders and further strengthening the global competitiveness of South Korea's security industry by facilitating communication throughout the international community.
Mr. Park said, "While serving as chairperson of the Korea Information Security Industry Association (KISIA) from February 2008 to February 2010, my peers and I successfully implemented diverse information security policies and systems adopted at the governmental level. I dedicate this recognition to all my peers, and it is an honor to be recognized by an internationally respected body like (ISC)2."
The showcased honoree for the Managerial Professional for an Information Security Project category was:
-- Mr. Ryuichi Inagaki, attorney (bengoshi), Ryuichi Inagaki Law Office,
Japan. Mr. Inagaki was honored for his leadership during an information
security workforce improvement program in Japan. The Nomination Review
Committee was impressed by his ability to advise the various
information security associations in Japan, including JSSA, JASA and
Japan Legal Support Center.
Mr. Inagaki was unable to attend the Gala Dinner, but his remarks were recorded in a short video clip, where he commented, "I believe that the enhanced information security education program is very important for both the technical security workforce and legal workforce in order to harmonize information security with legal compliance. I anticipate that the ISLA program will benefit the improvement of the information security workforce in Asia-Pacific."
The showcased honoree for the Information Security Practitioner category was:
-- Mr. Frank Kai Fat Chow, CISSP-ISSAP, ISSMP, CSSLP, senior systems
manager, Automated Systems Ltd., Hong Kong. Mr. Chow was recognized for
a project in which he reviewed and enhanced government IT security-
related regulations, policies and guidelines for the Office of the
Government Chief Information Officer of Hong Kong. He has also been
very active in organizing and supporting professional associations for
several years, including the (ISC)2 Affiliated Local Interest Group
(ALIG) Program and the Professional Information Security Association
(PISA), where he has contributed his expertise to foster local and
regional security communities.
Mr. Chow said, "I am eternally grateful for my ISLA recognition, not only for the positive affect it's had on me but also for the overwhelmingly positive influence it's had on my colleagues. They are all encouraged to live up to the high standard that the ISLA Program continues to set each year for workforce improvement. This recognition also belongs to my peers at PISA in Hong Kong, as I spent time with some wonderful professionals to develop the organization. Our rigorous efforts must continue because security is an ongoing process!"
