time to use this 10 years to find a new vocation
Yesterday evening peak hour I picked up a pax from bishan mrt to yishun mrt taxi stand. I was curious and asked if pax came from mrt station, the lady's reply was she arrive from circle line and find it tough to transfer to north/south line during that timing as it'll be sardine pack.
Moral of the story, more mrt lines doesn't necessarily mean better connectivity if commuters can't fit into the platform. Since time immemorial, there's demand for personalize transport and it'll continue. During ancient times we have human sedan, then came the horses and we have horse carriages and eventually came automotives. Ford made it affordable for the masses and many would have thought that'll spell the end of many coachmen. To fill the void of personalize transport, coachmen evolve into what we call today taxi drivers.
Should the new mrt lines make a heavy dent to your income, those that are not serious will throw keys first followed by botherline drivers. Cabbies generate so much income for taxi coys, do u think they will sit idle and die with us? Imagine there's 20-30% idle cabs lying at their yards, storage in itself will kill them not to mention loss of revenue. They will have some brainstorming sessions with LTA/NTA and what have you to come out with some measures to entice drivers back. Eventually the only way to entice drivers back will be more carrots which is fare increase. Gov already spelled out our transport roadmap for the future, which is less private cars n encourage more to take public transport. Taxi is an essential part of our public transport system plan.
To all my beloved brethrens who are worried, I'll say let's not worry too much and do what you need to do and that is just drive.
One last point, the incoming new lines are suppose to help alleviate the bottlenecks for current pop of 5 mio. Which is what the master planners should had put in place before the mass influx by adding adequate infrastructures to accommodating them. 6.5 mio is what our target pop will be, what next? I'm sure you know the outcome better than I :)
glad to see positive attitude in some drivers..good for you!
