I am sorry but i will disgaree with you and here is the reason why
1. Taxi driving is "earn and pay then feed yourself business" and not a "fixed income job" on which someone needs hiring , you may be right if out of 26000 taxi fleet 24000 were mothballing at yards accross the singapore, since major Taxi company is owned by we all know who the laws might have been munipilated to ficilitate such move as hiring FT drivers to do the job , but this is not the case there is a 3 month queue at such taxi companies to get a chance to drive a taxi by local true blue Singaporeans & new Citizens ( like me) .
2. once you change the law lets assume hypothetically , what is to stop the big players to demand similar treatment , on commsison sales people , front end staff , per peice work done payment for FT worker etc and the list goes on , The business man anywhere is the world are damn good in working around regulations to benifit themselves which naturally will in turn leave a wooping majority of Singaporeans out of jobs , now just the flooding and descriminative hiring in last few years have resulted in warning vote for the ruling party what do you think will happen in this senairo. politicians anywhere are best at covering their own rare ends first
3. there are some laws which are universal in nature , Foreigner anywhere in entire 193 countries in the world requires either to be "hired on salary" or "start and run his own business with certian investment and hiring some local citizens" in order to qulify for a "working visa" , now what will you think will happen leagally if Goverment try to change into such law where even commsion based work or work such as driving taxi becomes qulified for working visa, there will be law suits filed all accross the country not the mention negiative sentiments and votes for the governing party.
so in the end i still firmly believe no one willingly will commit such political suicide over such a small issue as Taxi drivers

Why ONLY Citizens can apply to drive TDs.... becos... upon any fatal accident(s).... you cannot just take your passport and disappeared.
MIW is also protecting the main core of basic jobs to the local citizens.
If MIW changed their minds (which is VERY UNLIKELY).... the confidence votes on their leadership will be shown on the next elections, ie 2016.
U think this will happened ?================================================================
Secondly.... Taxi companies (mainly CDG, SMRT) all along have enforcement officers (pretending to be potential passengers) during some big events especially, Holidays eves. Also, If there are frequent complains that the TDs chose passenger's destinations, then they will be an operation within the town area, occasionally with LTA enforcements.
