Singapore is so named due to the sighting of a lion by Sang Nila Utama. Thus called Singapora (Lion City). Now someone tell me how the fuck did that guy spotted a lion in Singapore?!? He must have drank one crate of beer and saw the dog in the above clip. He decided to call this island Lion and call his beer Tiger.
It was probably a hoax. Should the island be called Dogapura instead? They should change the contents in history books... don't quite make sense at all. Those that actually believed a lion was found in the wilds of Singapore... please don't reply.
You must remember this supposedly happened in the 14th century, and Sang Nila wasn't Malay.
The animal if he actually saw, would have been a Tiger, but maybe from the translation later on the tiger was described in Malay as a Lion - Singa. Or the whole episode could have lost in translation and the historians in choosing to describe what animal he saw, chose the most suitable - singa.
As for the dog theory, you must surely be aware that when people giving cities/country's names, they will always choose something suitable or nice. So we have Kuching instead of anjing which has a bad ring to it.
I tot my dog theory was funny. Historians were too comfortable lying, little verification is ever needed. As long as peopled believed, they can say whatever they want.
knn u two too free ..... LOL
Maybe the Merlion was a dog wearing a alfro wig while a fish giving him a blow job.

ya lah, tis dog theory is funny and Dogapura is very goody funny as well, very likeable. but to change history of a historical significance such as singa, a lion head roaring & mermaid body of each & every pple, to erupt loving care heart that signified pragmatism of multi_ism, flexibilism, moderatism, harmonism, lovingism, selflessism and universalism is not tat funny alreadi as it needs alot of monies to engage lawyer involving international court of justice. it really wld cause funnism in world history...lol
A book called Malayan Fables describes the travel of a prince from the kingdom of Srivijaya who travelled down to the kingdom of Bintan, and adopted by a somewhat amorous Queen of Bintan to be a prince. There, living a life of carefree luxury , he went fishing and hunting most of the days. Thereupon on one of his trips afar in his luxury sampan he spotted an island afar amidst azure blue seas and on it a strange creature . Now he knew it wasn't a lion,(perhaps a large civet cat?) but looked like a lion nevertheless . Thus the Lion look alike was Singa-pura- the name he gave to Singapore. Perhaps ironically an apt name for a country with people who may on the surface look fierce as lions but are actually pussy cats....very easily controlled, and placated.
Sang Nila Utama was purportedly descended from Alexandra the great
