SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight SQ12 bound for Los Angeles had to turn back to Tokyo's Narita Airport 2 hours and 40 minutes after takeoff due to engine issues on Tuesday (Sep 15).
SIA said vibrations were encountered in one of the aircraft's four engines. The engine was shut down by the crew as a precaution, a spokesperson said.
A viewer wrote in to Channel NewsAsia saying some passengers on board the Airbus A380 saw flames from the engine through the aircraft window, but SIA said preliminary inspection of the engine revealed no evidence of fire.
A replacement aircraft has been sent from Singapore and the flight was scheduled to depart Tokyo for Los Angeles at 4:15pm Tokyo time on Wednesday.
