Public Transport Security Command to enhance train & bus safety
SINGAPORE: Singapore's Police Force have set up the Public
Transport Security Command to better meet the enhanced security demands
of the expanding land transport system here.
What started off as the Police MRT Unit in August 2005 will now take on larger roles.
Called Transcom for short, the specialised unit will oversee and
manage all the policing efforts throughout the entire public land
transport network, which includes the rail lines and bus networks.
According to the Singapore Police Force, the men chosen for this
special task will receive three weeks of specialised training to
familiarise themselves with the security challenges facing the
transportation environment.
Police add that among the common cases where the men have had to
conduct checks include instances of bags left behind at the train
stations and bus interchanges.
There have been about 17 such cases each month between January and June this year.
The Transcom unit currently has 200 men and the number is set to double to 400 by next year.
