Taiwan pool ace ready to pocket Singapore pay deal
Taipei - Taiwan's pool champion Wu Chia-ching, unhappy about low pay and no guarantee of a job after retirement, plans to become a Singapore citizen and play for Singapore. Wu, 20, decided to quit Taiwan after his salary demands were not met by Taiwan sports officials and the Chinese-Taipei Billiard Association stripped him of the right to play for Taiwan. Taiwan media said Wu's decision to change sides would hurt the moral of Taiwan athletes who were not getting enough help from the state in training and attending overseas competitions. But sports officials said they were trying their best to improve conditions for players and that Wu's demands were too high. Wu Chia-ching's father, Wu Chen-chung, said Chia-ching has not yet applied for citizenship of Singapore or signed a contract with Singapore's billiard association. "The procedure for applying for Singaporean citizenship takes six months," he said told Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
This induction of foreign talent is really going overboard.
Oh, he followed by footstep hor...me one year old applied for singapore citizen...no need talent also singapore take me in.
Me sell taiwan sausages in my pub too.
all of a sudden singapore becomes like the america of asia...
Not bad, next time all the pissed off sports people from foreign countries can all become Singapore citizens to play for money.
But don't expect me to go and support or feel proud of this type of "Singaporean".
america of asia
If you talking about freedom of press, free speech, deam on man.
Besides playing competitively for sg, he's also here to promote the sport among young people in schools. Well, that's a gd thing actually. But certainly not the conversion to sg citizenship.
Is the world really so globalised now that nationality issues are easily transcended?
If he can drop his citizenship in a jiffy because of low pay, then ...
Guarantee of a job after retirement?
Hope it's not a job at some old folks home in JB.
would be good to use him to raise the profile of the sport + teach the sport here some things.
But the end motive and result still has to be improvements to us.
international sporting bodies should start only allowing people who are borned or have blood relations to citizens of that nation in order to represent that nation.

Maybe he can recommend more of his taiwanese players to convert to singapore citizenship.
The Singapore Billiard Association must be drooling at this prospect.

Fool.
What makes him think Singapore is any better?
We all know there is only one job that has guaranteed employment.
With good pay too.

Yeh thats how cheap a nationality is these days...all in the name of money and sports.
why not?
there are plenty of half-past-six or over-the-hill or cant-make-it sportmen joining us.
at least he is young and a former world champion.
he has a lot to offer us!!!
nationality is cheap, i wonder why the the singapore citizenship granting development, make it cheap. Why singapore cannot train it's own people in Pool and other sports.
He might be using us as a leverage against his own country to meet his demands, just as what Tauflik (badminton) once did, then he fell out with the Indonesian Badminton Association and started rumours that he wants to play for Singapore.
Mostly, I take such news with a pinch of news, particularly when its very pre-mature news.
Singapore is Chelsea
The tone of the Strait Times article kinda pisses me off though, they made it sound like it was a privilege and honour getting such a mercenary "foreign talent" to come.
This will set very good example for the youth.
Being a quitter or deserter is allowable if you are pay well by the other country.
Loyalty to one's country have a price tag.
This is how we will be getting the medals.
We use money to buy instead of groom.
Did he forget that he have served NS ?
I guessed no one told him that.
Taiwan NS = 1 years
Sg NS + Reservist = many many years + RT + IPPT
