If our own people don't have faith in each other, what hope is there? -_-
Anything is possible, it's just that we're pretty much lazy.
not that i look down on my own countrymen.....not likely for a true blue singaporean to win a olympic medal lah...come on let us face it....countries like china have population in the billion to choose their talent...while singapore have onyl a tiny population that is a couple of millions lah......so not exactly about lazy or not lah...more about whether does we have much choice to pick our ppl from lol.
Tao Li was born on 10 January 1990[3] in Hubei, People's Republic of China,[4] the only child of Tao Ran and his wife Li Yan. Her early years were spent in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province. She started swimming from a young age.[2] On one occasion at a particular local meet that she was confident of winning, she had her parents attend. However, she lost and was so upset and worried about "losing face" that she asked her parents not to come for future competitions. While she has now overcome that fear, her parents still keep to the "tradition" of not attending her meets in order not to distract her. In 2002, at the age of 13 years, Tao was brought to Singapore by her mother.[5] At the time she was training with a provincial swimming team and earning a monthly salary of RNB500. It was difficult for her parents to decide to send her to Singapore, and her father was initially against the idea.[2] Tao became a Singapore citizen in August 2005.[2][4]

To add on, Nastia Liukin ( USA ), gold medal winner of women's gymnastics individual a few days ago, was from Russia.

"Early life
Born in Shantou, China, Tan was the third of eight siblings. In 1937, he emigrated with his family from China to settle in Chinatown of Singapore. Tan's Teochew father died in a death-house at Sago Lane in Chinatown when he was 14. Tan stopped schooling after his first year at a secondary school"
I would definitely consider Tan Howe Liang a true blue Singaporean base on the fact that he was not talent scouted just to come to Singapore to help win a medal. He came here poor with his family and he was working as a clerk when he took part in Olympic. He funded his own trip. He got nobody to help him unlike the table tennis team where they were actually talent scouted and bought them over with cold hard cash.
The only one I would say that would become a true blue Singaporean would be Tao Li. She speak like a local. She speak Singlish! Which is close to our hearts unlike LJW who still speak like a China Chinese when she has stayed here the longest.
Singaporeans love $ if prize for winning olympic medal is an astronomical sum.. there will be ppl going for it..

I agree with you.
But for LJW hor... I thought she came here when she was very very young??? Was she talent scouted a not ah? I cannot remember...
when bowling gets introduced, singapore will stand a chance in the olympics. Just needs lotsa luck besides skills.
how come we haven't got any Jamaican kids to come over to train for athletics yet ah?

I dun think so... even in regional our bowling team's not always getting the top prize all the time. Plus the dunnoe-wad-Ong-guy ( cant remember the name ) sucks = ='' i juz cant stand his face.

becoming a citizen first den take sports as a career... least they have a sense of patriotism and belonging? I hope? Find it disgusting when the govt need to buy people over with money to represent singapore.
So it's not right to come to Singapore to play sports because Singapore is able to offer them the opportunity to do so comfortably? I mean, in an environment better than the one they came from I think. If they like the place here, they will feel the sense of belonging.

duh, you rather a foreigner than supporting a locally born champ like remy?
(whether you like his face or not aside.)
Eh, the entire sailing team consists of true blue singaporeans. And they bring back lots of medals in the asian and SEA games

I would support anyone who wears Sg's colours, and yes if the foreigner plays just as good i would rather have him than a locally born chimp like remy. ( I just don't like something about him... something he said in an interview or something )

you have a sickness called `buay kum luan'-ginitis.
you remind me of one of my cousins, she treats outsiders nicer than her own family, for reasons known to herself. so, rather than see a chimp throw the bowling ball well and win legit honors for singapore; you rather give the money to a foreigners.
it's like when singapore made known of her riches, all the chinaman come over and claim to be a relatives of singapore. they even renounced and cut their ties back home just to be able to have their fingers on the pie.
you are that `tai sor kua'.
Eh... what is 'buay kum luan', and 'tai sor kua'?
I juz dun like remy, that's why i made that comment. If any home-grown non-remy is as capable as any other FT then both are the same for me, unless the FT shows or says that he's really here just to win the prize money and will not stay after that, ditto the home-grown.
I think i lack national pride...

LJW came to Singapore when she was 14 and was made a citizen when she reach 18.
Tao Li came to Singapore when she was 13 and was made a citizen I think 2 years back or so.
But what I am trying to put across is - by the way have you seen Tao Li talked on television? - Did you notice she doesn't speak with a chinese accent. Tao Li speaks English but in Sing slang which us Singapore love that is Singlish! Tao Li has the heart to integrate herself into Singapore environment. That is why we local born Singaporean feels comfortable with her. We feel her sincerity to want to be a real Singaporean. Did you just see her on tv? Just only at 9.30pm news? She exclaimed 'Oh my god' in English! She shed her China chinese slang but certainly not LJW. She still speaks like a China Chinese despite she is already 27. How long has she been in Singapore? Age 27 minus 14 which is 13 long years in Singapore and she still speaks like China Chinese. To me she is not genuinely interested in being a true Singaporean. My guess, I will say my guess is because of the carrort that is the prize money. Of course not to say Tao Li is not interested in the prize money. I am sure everyone is. But it's the way they portray themselves. LJW is really out for the money only. You pay me I work and that's it. No love involved.
You get the picture my dear young man? That is the point I am getting through.

Originally posted by carzygoul:Based on the education system we see in singapore, will we ever win a olympic medal? As u realised, people in other countries started training sports seriously below the age of 10. But do you think it’ll happen in Singapore? Will parents take the risk to allow their children to take sports as a life time career? That would mean the amount of time spend studying a day to just a mere few hours? My answer would be no. A true blue singaporean would never ever win a medal based on the education system. Its all about paper chase in Singapore. Just sharing my 2 cents worth
under current system no chance... sg ppl r smart now... who will risk their comforty lifestyle for fulltime sportsman unless they already rich... if the miw wans real sg ppl to win they must give sportsman more protection(more $$$?) + change the mindset of parents...
