Hmm... if I tell u who's leaving, can u tell me which stocks are going to sky-rocket next? :P
I think national pride plays a part in this consideration. They may be born in god knows where but at the end of the day if they are proud to represent the nation and are proud to call themselves Singaporeans, that's good enough for me.

pls be clear, yours and my forefathers left becos of unease in the motherland and the opportunity that represents abroad. there are alot of untold risks involved. it is a matter of survival for them. there is no carrot dangled.
there is a clear distinction here.

If we can't predict what is going to happen then why pretend we can and doubt their loyalty ?
Our grandparents/parents left because of carrots dangled.
Don't argee with both statement.
They left because of war.
They wanted to go back to China.
It is an insult to our forefathers.

they will go when they find that they made enuf and the need to pursue their other dreams, not necesarily in ping pong.

Agreed.
At the end of the day, if they stay and truely feels at home here, I'll be most happy for them.
Pls note that I'm certainly not trying to discredit them of their incredible achievements at the Olympics.
Anyone who can walk away with a medal at the Olympics is definitely in a class of his/her own. :)

we all leave for someplace else because of better opportunities. Why did our forefather's not go back ? Better opportunities are carrots dangled.

Im going to insult them further. When the war ended why did they not go back ?

"better opportunities are carrot dangled?
what kind of rationale is that?
When the war ended why did they not go back ?
why don't you go ask them?

good twisting here....

U're absolutely right about that.
There is little reason to doubt someone who had first migrated to Singapore on his/her own accord, obtains his/her citizenship here, then subsequently plays for the nation.
But that's not quite the case here... Maybe I'm naturally paranoid.
Like in my reply to deathwish, if after the Olympics they're happy to remain here and call Singapore their home, I'll be more than happy for them.

How?
When I watched the game yesterday, I have a team to root for. I never watch a single game in the olympics and tis is the only match I watched. I watched with a group of people and my colleagues and even supervisor watched the game together. When the team is losing, we curse and swear. When the team is winning, we cheered and laugh. When the team finally win the whole game, we let out a loud cheer and everybody stand up and give others a high 5.
I agree tat the team r all imported, same as other team. Even in korea one of the team member is from china. The difference is, they wear the flag of singapore on their shirt and they represent our country. There is a target for us, there is something to root for.
If u talk about native born singaporean, your grandma or grandfather r borned in china as well. The only difference between them and the PRC now is the price and convenience of travel. In the past, your grandfather/grandmother dream is also to go back to their homeland rich.

You have a point.

I'm sure there are some who are still alive in their 90s.

They came to seek a better life, for the opportunity to be better off then where they were. I don't know what's Li Jiawei's life like in Beijing but if she could take up Singapore Citizenship i would suspect she is better off here. Not only in the monetary sense but other facets.
Nope. As said, their shirt have a singapore flag. Tat makes it a target, something to root for in the olympics. If there is no such team, then we would probably be working, no one cares about the olympic and the thread here will be scolding the gov for doing too little to cultivate sports

ah..sorry..was buying reddust idea that they came 200+ years ago. Anyway..those in their 90s took up Singapore citizenship. it is unlikely they can go back and get their native citizenship. Its not that easy.
