Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce that John Terry has signed a new five-year contract.
The Chelsea and England captain put pen to paper at the Cobham training ground earlier today (Friday, July 27)
John Terry has finally put pen to paper on a new deal at Chelsea that keeps him at the club until 2012.
Talks had come to a standstill earlier this summer, but whilst the England captain was away with the Chelsea squad in America earlier this month, the discussions gathered pace once again.
The defender finally reached an agreement with his club and signed a five-year deal believed to be worth £130,000-a-week with the Blues.
“I'm really happy this has now been concluded,” Terry told the club's official website.
“There has been a lot of speculation but these things take time and I never had doubts that I wanted to stay at Chelsea and that the club wanted me to stay.
“I hope the fans can see that we are all trying to build something special here, both for now and for the future, and I want to be a part of that. I have been at Chelsea all my career and have the privilege of being captain.
“Now it's time to look forward to the new season which we are all very confident about."
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon welcomed the news.
“This is an important day for Chelsea. This was the right deal for us and for John,” said Kenyon.
“As a club we are committed to try and keep our players together on long term deals and this was a natural progression from last season when other players also committed themselves for the long term.
“As captain, John is clearly a key player for Chelsea and also a great symbol of the club so naturally we are pleased this has been agreed.” -

The £135,000 a week Chelsea will be paying John Terry until 2012 is a fortune. A hideous amount of money to pay one man and further proof that football operates on a whole other level of reality.
But in purely relative terms, JT is probably worth that obscene amount. Here are 10 reasons why:
1. Lucas Neill is reportedly earning £60,000 a week at West Ham, so relatively speaking £135,000 a week for John Terry is an absolute bargain.
2. Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko are both on £130,000 a week. John Terry has to be worth £5k a week more than either of those two, based on what they contribute to Chelsea.
3. The England captain is only 26. Based on the careers of other central defenders, his best five years are ahead of him.
4. Given the problems even the richest clubs have finding suitable centre backs, Chelsea would be insane not to pay whatever it took to keep John Terry at Stamford Bridge.
5. Despite his recent mega-wealth, the presence of John Terry prevents Chelsea looking like a traveling band of foreign millionaire playboys. I'm aware that that's a Sci-Fi Channel worthy paradox. But in the era of expensive, overpaid foreigners (that, in all fairness, Chelsea helped usher in) having a London born and bred captain and talisman who looks like he could win a pub brawl is literally priceless.
6. Especially when you're Roman Abramovich, and the word priceless has no meaning.
7. One club men should be rewarded.
8. How do we know someone hasn't broken down what John Terry actually contributes on the field and decided to pay him £1,000 per tackle, header or clearance, plus £10,000 for every time he shouts loudly and points at someone?

a defender role is a shitty task as every matches lost, they will be accountable for their mistake, n every hard-tackle might earn cards or cost injuries. furthermore they can be consider underpaid.
but if i am a manager, i dun mind getting young defender than getting those who demand so much money. cos no matter what, defender will somehow made mistake.
paying this amount for defender is a market spoilt. hardworking striker like drogba will definitely unhappy as he contribute goals n yet getting lesser than a defender. n this might cost an future impart to england which england defenders might demand 6-digit figure.
somehow i feel that england players r getting overpaid than foreigner players.

his salary is probably the equivalent to 1 whole team's salary in the championship -

With amount lesser defenders are getting elsewhere, doesn't seem fair in a way that someone like John Terry gets anything less.
Also like what has been mentioned in this thread and elsewhere before, Ballack and Sheva get that amt of pay as well so John Terry as someone who contributes so much to the team should not be getting any less. -
