Lifes in JC and POLY?

i also thought how a level life can be tougher than o level life... i was dead wrong.
time really flies in jc. reach home about 5. finish homework and all sometimes until about 10. if u wana do some revision still can do abit. add project work into the equation, you just realize that time is never enough.
while you dont have to be extremely intelligent to be in a JC, you need to be extremely hardworking. certain topics taught a few months ago can be forgotten easily if concept isnt very well grasped, almost all topics are linked for all subject, partial fractions to integration to differentiation, and differentiation links to maclaurin's series, graphs, and so on.
you cannot set your own pace, cannot catch up, you lose. that is what is happening to my h1 chem and h2 phys now. been flunking this 2 subjects quite badly.
especially project work(assume its your first year in college, where PW and MT are a must, unless u have HMT for O levels then MT can be excluded), it is very time consuming. there was a period of time i slept at 4, woke up at 6.30 and go to school everyday for 1 whole week. I consume 7 servings of coffee everyday for that week.
just recently my friend went sleepless for 1 whole day, did not sleep and report to school.
and if you do not have pure sci/amaths background, its generally not to aim for the 'better' jcs. go to the jcs where the tutors will give the students special attentions should the need arise.
i don't know about others, but don't be like me who end up choosing going to a jc because i have no idea what i want to study further.. sure regret.
i don't really see myself staying in a jc should i repeat. -

hey there everyone.
i wonder why nobody asked about ITE because i believe ITE is equally better than JCs and Polys. everyone have their different experiences of life inside ITE, depending of the kinda teachers you meet, the kinda schoolmates you meet, the kinda classmates you meet, the kinda co-curricular activities you join.
in ITE, our classes are by modular basis. we learn different things every semester. we do not start our day with flag-raising ceremonies. and we have classes starting and ending at different times of the day, just like normal polytechnics.
it's true that ITE's hands-on minds-on hearts-on because:
[b]HANDS-ON: we really do hands-on stuff. yeah apart from students who specialise in the technical, mechanical, electronical fields.
for business and hospitality courses, we also learn how to create and manage our own events and use basic office computer applications. for students specialising in retail and tourism, they get to handle the point-of-sale system and also the system that's used commonly throughout the tourism industry for booking of air tickets, etc.
for it courses, loads of hands-on either on the hardware or the software side depending on the specialisation you've chosen. the one taught in clementi campus is business-information technology in which you're taught on basics of business and also mixed with information technology. for dover and tampines campus if i'm not wrong, theirs is information technology which either allows to opt for the hardware field or the multimedia software field.
nursing is also another option you may want to consider because of the high demands in the healthcare industry in the recent years because of the ageing population in singapore.
MINDS-ON: simply means the determination that we ite students have to be better than others, irregardless of jcs poly universities. we have that focused-mind to aim ourselves towards polytechnics.
HEARTS-ON: our student nurses are the best examples out there la. but seriously, ite lecturers do care for us even though they have to set us discipline and attendance standards. they do listen to your problems and help you with their heart and passion. some of the lecturers inside actually put aside their high-salaried careers just to teach us.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
each campuses have different kinda CCAs. some have taekwondo, aikido. others have entrepreneurship, student council (i'm in it myself =P), green club, business studies club, etc =) there's even gaming CCA in ite as well.. in clementi campus, we have cyberCT. =)

Wake up at 6am. School starts 7:30pm. Leave school 9pm (CCA, extra lessons, etc). Reach home around 10pm. Do homework until 12am. Do revision until 1am. Sleep.
My average JC2 life:
Wake up at 6am. School starts 7:30pm. Leave school 10pm. Reach home 11pm. Do homework until 1pm. Too dead to do revision. Sleep, while feeling guilty for not doing revision. Dream about doing badly for test. -
well...i can tell u to be sure u dont waste ur time if u want to go jc, be disciplined and make sure u study and do your tutorials because that is going to be a fundamental step to make sure u get promoted to j2 and ultimately, be prepared for A's. tts because i wasted my j1 slacking all the way( from slping in lectures to not doing tutorials to failing every test possible except gp ). at the end of j1, of cux i cudnt be promoted with the way i fared in promos, 1 gp pass, 1 subpass and the rest fail.
thus i made the decision to go poly. Its much more relax then jc because it doesnt feel that demanding and it feels easier to study the stuff my poly course offers. However that does not mean u can slack alot also cux u oso ve to study n make sure u do well for ur projects too. i tink i lk the way poly works cux its much more relax in a way, casual wear and such, suits myself more cux im not born a mugger.

Very true... as long as you pretend to be learning, you would pass even if you fail the tests....

jc where got hard?
Last time i slept at 11pm latest. I just go for 90% of the lecturers. Didnt really study hard cos i already understand from lectures. A level results: 3As. My GP only B4 though...chinese also sux B3

JC= study 4 modules in 2 years. (chinese dont need to count cos you dont study chinese anyway. Maybe read chinese comics and newspaper only?)
uni= study 5 modules in 3 months.
(compete with top foreigners from around the world. (china students make up more than 20% of cohort) (compete with RJC, HCJC students) -

in JC, it is not compulsory to join CCA unlike in sec sch. My CCA was computer club though. Really shiok. Every time go play online games or stuff. Sometimes learn programming. Free lessons.
I dont think CCA affects anyone in A levels.
Most CCA will stop recalling JC2 student after their 2nd year june so that they can concentrate on their A levels. -
overall, i think both JC and poly are easy.
Poly only needs GPA of 2.0 and above to graduate. Anyone can do it right as long as they come to sch often. The problem for poly is not easy to get into university.
As for JC, you have to make it to uni for sure because the A level cert is useless. I have seen friends scoring C, C, C and D7 in GP and they still get in university. So it is not that hard either.
Overall, i would say poly is harder because you have to study hard to be the top 20% of the cohort so you stand a higher chance to get into uni.
For JC, 90% can get in so you can just enjoy life. Even if fail, repeat another year, most likely can get in uni within 3 years. -

There are two type of assessment in RP:
1) Daily grades
2) Understanding Test(UT).
The way to calculate module grade is best 14 out of 16 daily grades and 3 out of 4 best UT.
It's the most easiest to get high GPA in RP out of the other 4 polytechnics. From what I see, most of the students are able to get GPA 3.0 and above. You can hardly see someone with less than 3.0. That's the point.
In contrast to other polytechnics, students study extremely hard in order to get good grades. There is a considerable learning there. And the exam system is there, so you can really see who's studying and who's not. However, this is very different case in RP.
The 'facilitators' assess student based on their participation, contribution, and powerpoint presentation on a daily basis. Which means to say, you might need to be a good actor in order to get good grade. One must know how to act like he/she is participating in class.
Also moderation for the Understanding Tests are unbelievable lax when in Year 1. A student can have a raw mark of 5 out of 30, and yet still score 'A' for that particular module test. I am utterly disgusted by what I've seen.
In my opinion, what you learn in RP using the Problem-Based Learning system does not reflect deep learning and memorizing. The learning is there for a short period of time, and it's gone after that. Though the saying that induced learning by asking question helps learning, but I don't see the benefits of this over long terms. Students simply abuse this to get good grades in RP.
As students advance from Year 1 to Year 2 and 3, it's harder to abuse the system as compared to when in Year 1. However the exploiting still takes place even in their Year 3.
At the end of the day, I still feel that examinations is the best way to grade students.
