Tale of the game: United should be confident but they could be without five senior defenders when they visit Turf Moor for the first time in a League match since April 1976. Rio Ferdinand is still out while Jonny Evans suffered a recurrence of an ankle injury in Sunday’s game. Nemanja Vidic, Gary Neville and Rafael are also missing. United are unbeaten in their last four League visits to Burnley, who give a test to Stephen Caldwell, who has a groin strain. Michael Duff is still missing, with a sprained ankle.
Burnley (Probable, 4-1-4-1): Jensen; Mears; Carlisle, Jordan, Kalvenes; Alexander, Paterson, Elliott, McCann, Blake; Fletcher.
United (Probable, 4-4-2): Foster; Fabio, O’Shea, Brown, Evra; Valencia, Fletcher, Scholes, Nani; Berbatov, Rooney.
Referee: Phil Dowd.

Stat of the game: Burnley’s last win over United came in 1968. Since then, nine subsequent League meetings have produced five United wins and four draws.

Should be close.
Manchester United go to Turf Moor tonight hoping the temperature of the showers matches the reception they are sure to receive — hot.
Burnley’s archaic stadium will be packed to the rafters for the visit of the champions and it will be just as crowded in the dressing rooms where a United squad accustomed to five-star treatment have to prepare in surroundings that fall well short of Premier League standards.
Ferguson’s players will have to fight over a handful of showers or hop in a communal bath that dates back to the 1970s.
‘It’s not the best place to come but we like that,’ said Burnley striker Robbie Blake. ‘We want to make Turf Moor as difficult as we can for teams.
‘It might be an advantage for us if they are walking down that cold tunnel thinking, “this looks a bit dodgy”. ‘We can’t make it too hospitable for them, putting sofas in and things like that.’
Arsenal, Tottenham and Fulham can testify to the difficulties of playing away to Burnley.
They all lost Carling Cup ties at Turf Moor last season, and Owen Coyle’s side hope to reproduce the unique atmosphere of those nights against Ferguson’s side.
Coyle said: ‘It’s a sell-out and it’s under lights — I always liked a night game myself. We’ll be looking to replicate that form we showed against the elite teams last season.
‘It’s fitting that the first game back in the Premier League is against the champions,
Manchester United, and the whole town is excited by the prospect.’
well, Chelsea started the ball rolling, so all else have to keep you..
John O'Shea wants to bring Burnley crashing down to earth a bit sooner than normal at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.
Manchester United are the Clarets' first visitors for a top-flight game since 1976 and a capacity crowd will welcome Sir Alex Ferguson's men, providing a pretty hostile atmosphere in the process.
Not that United's players will be too bothered about that. And, having opened their title defence with a narrow win over Birmingham on Sunday, O'Shea is determined to make it two victories on the trot.
"We know teams that get promoted are on such a high in the first month in particular, then they realise how tough the Premier League is," said O'Shea.
"We have to make sure they realise it a bit earlier than normal."
It used to be said London clubs were at a disadvantage in the championship stakes due to the number of local derbies they had to play.
Now the balance has shifted to the north-west. Including Stoke, there are nine teams from the region, with Burnley the latest addition.
Mind you, there is not much travelling involved. And, for United at least, it is better to get the game out of the way now than in the depths of mid-winter.
"We are glad not to be going to Turf Moor in December or January," said O'Shea.
"We get the best of the pitch, which could be an advantage. There are definitely worse times to be playing Burnley.
"We are not travelling too far either. We know exactly what it is like when you play the likes of Wigan or Bolton and we are aware the atmosphere will be pretty intense.
"But we have had great results against all those sides and hopefully we can use that as the key for this one."
Wes Brown stands by to replace Jonny Evans, while Michael Carrick and Anderson look set to start in central midfield after not even making the bench at the weekend.
They will come up against a familiar face too in Chris Eagles, who spent five years at Old Trafford before joining Burnley at the start of last season.
"Chris normally says he will get five goals every game," laughed O'Shea.
"It will no doubt be the same again because he is a confident lad.
"I am sure the Burnley fans are hoping he can produce some of the form we know he can and he can be a star for them and score lots of great goals, but not on this occasion."
Sir Alex Ferguson has warned that his players may need every ounce of their experience to see through Burnley's 'red-hot' return to top flight football at Turf Moor tonight.
The United boss says it will be a "flag day" for the newly-promoted Clarets, playing their first match at home in English football's top division for 33 years.
"It can be hard going to a promoted team's ground early on," says Sir Alex. "You can imagine what the atmosphere is going to be like at Burnley, it's going to be red-hot.
"It'll be a flag day, it's going to be a big occasion for them. But hopefully that's where our experience helps in these situations."
Sir Alex will not want to add to the fairytale, but admits he's watched events unfold for Owen Coyle and his men with great interest.
"Burnley is a fantastic story," he added. "They've been outside the top league for 33 years, it's a long time. No matter what happens this season, they won't forget this. It'll be a great experience.
"I watched them last season, I saw them against Arsenal and they were fantastic. They played really well."
But after seeing off fellow Barclays Premier League new arrivals Birmingham City at the weekend, the United boss wants the same again at Turf Moor.
"Over the years we've played promoted teams early on in the season, and this year's no different with Birmingham and then Burnley. It'd be nice to get off to get a good start. We didn't do that well early on, so we need to change that this time around."
Wes Brown is standing by to replace Jonny Evans as United head to Burnley for their first league meeting since 1976.
With Nemanja Vidic (calf) and Rio Ferdinand (thigh) already ruled out and Evans a major doubt, Brown is set to partner John O'Shea in central defence.
Michael Carrick and Anderson are set to make their first appearances of the season, while Michael Owen could be included after being introduced as a substitute in Sunday's 1-0 win over Birmingham.
Burnley will be without their captain Steven Caldwell after he failed to recover from a groin injury.
Having already sat out the club's Premier League debut at Stoke, the Clarets defender will also miss the first top flight game to be played at Turf Moor for 33 years.
Caldwell suffered the problem on international duty with Scotland last week.
Defender Michael Duff will also miss the match, but Burnley are boosted by the return of summer signing David Edgar, who could make his debut after sitting out Saturday's game through a suspension he picked up while still at Newcastle.
Andre Bikey could also be in line to make his debut after the Cameroon international completed his move from Reading.
