The Ministry of Education (MOE) will no longer name the top-scorers in national examinations when it releases the results.
In response to queries from The Straits Times, an MOE spokesman said on Tuesday that it wanted to "balance the over-emphasis on academic results".
The Ministry wants to "help parents and students understand that academic performance is just one aspect of a student's overall development and progress".
The Straits Times had reported on Tuesday that the MOE was considering not naming the pupils with the highest scores in the Primary School Leaving Examination. This comes in the light of the ongoing debate on the PSLE, where the exam has been criticised as being too high-stakes.
but im sure they will say how many and from which schools
Why is MOE pandering to the parents over such a thing?
Taking the name of the student away doesnt take away the knowledge that such people exist, nor the stress!
I mean....look at this.
Obviously its just encouraging a black market for information.
more like wanting to hide the fact tt more than half of the top scorers list is foreigners
I dont see the big deal in that either.
Let's face it la.....the top scorers in uni also a lot of foreigners.
Might as well get used to that fact.
Besides.
I do reckon there's a lot to learn just by interacting with these smart folks, foreign or not.
highest 285 - a tie! (govt say cannot say who and where)
lowest 43 (no one cares who and where)

Although a bumper crop of 48,333 Dragon-Year born pupils sat the Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) this year, a slightly higher proportion - 63.1 per cent of them - qualified for Express stream this year.
Of the cohort, 23.1 per cent made it to the Normal (Academic) stream and 11.4 per cent for the Normal (Technical) course.
As announced on Tuesday, the Education Ministry did not list the top scorers or the schools they came from.
But The Straits Times understands that the top score this year is 285.

The top scorer is from South View Pri
top scorers are locals or foreigners?
Sorry for the misinformation....
''And Channel NewsAsia understands that one student in Nanyang Primary is a top scorer in the PSLE.''

PSLE success stories
They scored high marks in the PSLE but school is not just about exams for these 12-year-olds
Pathlight kindled love of maths
By JANICE TAI
AT TIMES, Sherman Ho finds it hard to focus when it comes to doing homework.
The 12-year-old, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Asperger syndrome, either daydreams or figets and prances around his room.
But put the popular Murderous Maths book series in front of him, and his attention will be captured for hours on end. The fun facts and mathematical puzzles sparked his interest. He went on to represent Singapore at a recent Maths Olympiad and emerged fourth in the Asia-Pacific.
Yesterday, he was also the best Primary Schhol Leaving Examination (PSLE) performer among his cohort at Pathlight School.
He scored 273, with A stars in English, Maths and Science,. Pathlight students are exempted from Mother Tongue subjects. His score is the highest so far in the school's eight-year history.
He hopes to go to NUS High School to pursue his love for maths: "I love algebra, it is easy, just manipulating the equations."
Pathlight, for children with autism, has 712 pupils who can move on from Primary 6 to secondary classes at three mainstreamschools it has partnered.
When he was three, Sherman's mother Alice Wee noticed that he would bang his head on walls and lie down on the floors of shopping malls when he did not get his way. She placed him in Pathlight after he was diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger, a form of autism, at about five years old.
"It was the best decision I ever made. The teachers cared and supported us with his behavioural problems," said Mrs Wee, 41, an insurance specialist.
Of the 73 Pathlight pupils who sat the exam, 88 per cent passed and are eligible for the Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) streams.
While proud of her son's achievement, Mrs Wee said: "No one will remember his PSLE score after tomorrow. What matters is that he will be happy, have friends and a job."
