Hello, the following advice is not from a psychologist or a psychology student but only proven with Tein Chui Shan Crystal from results in tuition sessions.
I would just like to share with you that I read students with dyscalculia know numbers in dots. eg: 1= .
First method: Playing with Dice
Therefore, I play dice with them. I throw the dices and we take turns in addition. I try to explain 6+4=10 or 5+5=10
I ever make a student add up till seven dices as he got better with it.
Next, I take two dices and we add then subtract continuously, and next subtract then add.
Second Method: Counting too 100 forwards and backwards.
Most elementary students can count forwards to 100 but many stumble when counting backwards. If you teach tuition, you will realise there are certain numbers students grapple with; it's obvious when they count backwards.
Keep the students counting and next attack their weakness by setting them questions with the numbers they have difficulty with. You can start with questions dealing with the four operations.
Third Method:
Play "Blink". This is a game of patterns, numbers and shapes. It is a good educational game to play especially when the student is feeling bored.
In general, as a tutor, during the first lesson, set them a quiz on the subjects they are being tutored and read their completed school assignments and assessment books. Simply read the wrong answers, those questions marked with a cross and if you can glance through the correct ones.
Then, attack their weaknesses. Normally, there is a pattern to the type of questions the students get wrong, which means a lack of clarification in certain theories of the subject. Finally, just discover those patterns of weaknesses and clarify the theories. Like I said, there is a pattern if you track the student's homework.
Welcome. Here are some additional tips.
Number bond game
I play a number bond game with my students. I use UNO and poker cards. I prefer using poker cards as there are the pictures to add up to the number but if you have any other recommendations: post here- because I don't want to encourage gambling.
Eg: Number bond for "4"
0 4
1 3
2 2
I make the students form number bonds with UNO or poker cards from one to ten for a start. Next, I make them form number bonds for a random number. Then I turn to the primary assessment exercise on number bonds and instruct them to fill in the numbers. Next, I play blink with them, then the number bond game again before making them do mathematics homework again, taking note of which numbers they are weak in.
Ok, just one more tip. For some students, they don't have that much difficulty in mathematics but rather, it's their working which is untidy which causes them to add and subtract wrongly. I always tell these students- ones digits, the places digits and the operations all in vertical straight columns.
E.g of an untidy working: 1 0 0 0
2 2 2
+ 3 3 3
__________
____________
The student simply sees top and bottom and add up the digits wrongly.
Lesson: Don't have untidy working!
