I am sec2 this year and i just got back my result yesterday. My overall percentage was 64.5% , level position was 57 out of 163.
I think i am sort of week in science even though i got an B4 for overall. My phycis CA got a A1 but i scored an F9 for chemistry. Hence , i am struggling whether to take pure science or combined science.
My friend advised me that pure science will allow me to have more choices for admission to JCs and Polys. But i am afraid that i screwed up everything as my sister told me pure science will be quite difficult and that also the fact that i got an F9 for chemistry , i hasn't pass my sec 1 & 2 chemisty module CAs before.
I got an C5 for my e-maths. This year, all along i found myself struggling with maths and i admit that it is my greatest weekness and fear. I passed 3 out of 6 CAs for maths, I failed SA1 but i passed SA2. My overall was 55 out of 100. I couldn't decide whether to take A maths or principal of accounts(POA). For my standard, i believe i take POA will do.
However, my friend highlighted that A maths will be important for admission to JCs and Polys. But i am afraid i wont be able to cope with.
Here are the 2 classes and the courses they offer, i struggling with:
3E3 = english
Mother tounge / Higher mother tounge
combined science
E-maths
A maths/ POA
Art/ Dnt / AS
Geography/ history
3E4 = English
Mother tounge / Higher mother tounge
Emaths
A maths
Geography/ history
CHEMISTRY
PHYSICS
What shall i do? Can anyone give me some advises?
1) Is A maths going to be difficult and important for poly/jcs?
2) Is pure science going to be difficult and also is it important for poly/jcs?
3) Which subject combination shall i choose according to my results?
Thanks
1. Level of difficulty? It depends. Without A Maths, you are not allowed to do H2 maths in most of the JCs, which is compulsory for all students in Science stream, which implies you can only qualify for art stream in most of the JCs. However, A Maths is not important for admission to Polys.
2. Pure sciences. For polys, it does not matter much as combined science is sufficient.
For JCs:
Top two JCs: Without A2 for Pure Physics/Pure Chemistry, you are not allowed to do H2 Physics/H2 Chemistry.
Other 1st/2nd tier Jcs: Without a minimum B4 for the pure, or a A2 for the combined, you are not allowed to do relevant science subjects at H2 level.
Other Jcs: Without a pass for the pure, or a B3-B4 for the combined, you are not allowed to do relevant science subjects at H2 level.
If you decide to aim for a JC, I strongly suggest you to take 3E4. Otherwise, 3E3 is sufficient for poly admission.
wat sch?
Where are you now in Secondary 2 does not make much difference where you will be two years later. There are many foreign student from China when they come here know nothing about English. But they still top the national with A1 English, anyway.
i wont name my sch but i can tell you that it is quite near to tampinese central and it have uniform which look like temasek JC -.-
i guess it's pasir ris sec
bingo
POA is easy but it can be hard to score A1 in O lvl since the benchmark is always very high (88~90+). It was 92 in my year, 2009. . the calculation parts could easily give you 60 ~ 80 marks very shiok, but you will need to know / memorise the theory well in order to secure the rest of the marks...
On the other hand, Amath can be very hard , some topics will be completely alien to you, you need to put in real and constant effort in it.... i failed an easy math paper back in sec 2 streaming exam, but still can do well in amath after i really wake up my idea lor..

As a tuition teacher myself ,i always encouraged my student to take add maths .indeed a maths is not important in poly, but it is the foundation for engineering courses .so basically whether if u want to go poly or jc ,you cant escape the Amaths altogether.
no harm applying for it.even if you cant get,you should try to take tuition with a competent tutor to get good foundation before entering Jc Or going poly.
alright, thanks guys
