Hi guys, plse help me, I am stuck with this question. Thanks bro and sis...
Alan and Bernard started driving from Tuas checkpoint at the same time, heading towards Malaccz travelling along the same route.
After 1 hour, Alan completed 1/2 of the journey, while Bernard completed 1/3 of the journey.
If Alan's driving speed was 40km/h faster than Bernard, what was the distance between the Tuas checkpoint and Malacca?
Let x be the speed that Bernard was driving.(km/h)
So the speed of what Alan was driving will be (x+40) km/h
Using the formula: Speed x Time = Distance...
1/2 of the journey distance= (x+40) x 1 = (x+40) km
Total distance= (x+40) x 2= 2x+80
1/3 of the journey distance= (x) x 1= x km
Total distance= (x) x 3= 3x
So work out this equation,
3x = 2x + 80
x = 80km
So the distance between Tuas checkpoint and Malacca is= 80 x 3 = 240km
or
(80 x 2) + 80= 240km.
Considering that this is PSLE and during that time, I recall not understanding algebra, you can implement the graph to demonstrate the difference between the 2 cars:

In which you will realise through the power of fraction, that 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6, whereby 1/6 = 40KM. By understanding this fundamental, simply 6*40KM to obtain 240KM as the total distance between SG and Malacca.
Didn't realise that I can't use [img] here.

Do note that it's 40km/h x 1h = 40km. If the question was:
"After 2 hours, Alan completed 1/2 of the journey, while Bernard completed 1/3 of the journey."
instead, it would be 1/6 journey -> 40km/h x 2h = 80km, and the answer would be 480km.
Thanks guys for your help.
I will tell my kid how to do base on the solution over here.
Many many thanks folks!
