I am going to take A level as a private candidate next year. I don't know what is the "subject combination" like because i didn't have a chance to further my studies after my o level due to family circumstances. Now that things have seems to settle down, I decided to further my studies. What I want to know is if I can take 3 H2 + GP as a candidate and apply for local university(put all the grades aside) generally? The combinations would be Maths, Geography and History. Private/oversea university is out of the question due to financial restrain and the recognition of private uni in Singapore.
u need to learn paragraphing.
Before I offer any further advice.
You want to take the exams next yr.
I don't think it'd be wise unless you got some super background first?
I don't know if you have any super background or not, but without it, 1 year does seem tough, PLUS, there's practical for sciences to consider.
If you're thinking of catching up to peers because of time lost, put it aside, set aside at least 1.5 years to really master it. No point rush and have a lousy attempt.
I'm considering degree in arts and humanities that's why I'm taking non science subject. As for PW, it's impossible for me to do it since I am not studying in JC. I thought uni generally look at your best 3 H2 and GP?
So if I were to take as private student, my combination would look like this now:
H2: geography, maths, History
H1: Physic (no practical test)
H1 GP
Is that sufficient for application to university?
Im sorry, i did my best.
Most NUS, NTU, SMU courses required Project Work (which is only possible to take in a JC or MI). Without Project Work, your score for PW is considered U (Ungraded, equivalent to an F9 grade at 'O' levels), which makes getting into a popular course in the local University impossible (since you have to compete against other students with a better grade in PW).
SIM, being a private University, does not require PW. You should check with NUS, NTU and SMU, whether your desired Uni course in particular, requires you to calculate in your (non-existent or Ungraded or F9) Project Work score.
only jesus can save you.

so if I understand it correctly...for those aiming NTU/NUS/SMU...there is now practically no such thing as private A levels due to PW?
90% will come from 'A' level result whereas the rest of the 10% comes from Project Work. As for physic, I check seab website and between H1 and H2 physic, only H2 have practical test. I will consider taking it in 2010. Xcert's comment made me jump, I will be totally shattered if what he said is true.

no need to jump...U will be ok if the course that U want to go do not require fantastic grades like AAA...then U can afford the 10%...just that the way I look at it...the private A level ppl are disadvantaged by 10% for PW...discrimination?

Yes, which is (one of many reasons) why I personally am against PW. But the decision has already been made and implemented since 2 years ago (again, something unique only to Singapore), so there's nothing we can do about it.
Hi Trapped Fly,
Indeed, NUS/NTU/SMU has made it compulsory for school "A" Level applicants in 2008 onwards to include Project Work in the computation of the university admission score ie 3H2 subjects, 1 contrasting H1 subject, General Paper and Project Work. Mother Tongue is not compulsory in the computation of the university admission score.
However, NUS/NTU/SMU has made allowance for private candidates ie the university admission score for private candidates need not include PW ie 3 "A" level subjects and General Paper only. 2008 was the last year where private candiates can take "A" level subjects and "AO" level subjects.
So, private candiates who take the new syllabus (ie the H2 subjects and H1 subjects instead of the "A" level subjects and "AO" subjects), these private candidates MIGHT be subjected to the same requirements as the school candidates ie to include Project Work in the computation of the university admission score ie 3H2 subjects, 1 contrasting H1 subject, General Paper and Project Work.
There are no confirmed replies from NUS/NTU/SMU that allowances will be continued to be given for private candidates who take the new syllabus or a zero point will be assigned for Project Work in the computation of the University admission score for these private candidates. It seemed that NUS/NTU/SMU has not decided on this yet.
Thank you for your kind attention.

I emailed all three local uni about this and so far I received reply from NTU and SMU. These is their reply:
SMU:
Dear xxxxxx,
Thank your for your interest in SMU.
Private A-Level candidates are not
required to submit Project Work results.
NTU:
Thank you for your email.
You will not have any score only for the Project Work component.

I will be really disadvantaged if I apply for NTU. All is left is NUS's reply.
