Hi all ,I need some help to answer the two questions ..really cant figure out how to solve it.Thanks for any help in the first place
Question 1
The figure below shows two rectangles ,A and B overlapping each other.[1/6] of rectangle A is shaded while [1/4] of rectangle B is shaded.
a) What fraction of the figure is not shaded ?
b) Given that the area of the total figure is 162cm2 ,find the area of the shaded part.
Question 2
A box contained an equal number of 50c coins and 20c coins at first.Peter took out eight 50c coins, exchanged them for 20c coins and put the 20c coins into the box.In the end, there is the same amount of money in the box.Given that the ratio of the number of 50c coins to the number of 20c coins in the box became 1:2 ,how much money is there in the box ?
I'll be frank with you.
You run a tuition agency: urgently looking tutor!!
and teach tuition: Group tuition at kallang/bendemeer sec3/sec 4 O level
If you are a tutor, I don't see any reason why you continue to tutor, yet cannot do the questions...

think in terms of fractions...
1) if 1/6 of A is shaded, how much of A is not shaded?
2) if 1/4 of B is shaded, how much of B is not shaded?
3 if 1/6 of A is 1/4 of B, what is the ratio of their area
3) what is the total area of the figure?
quite challenging for 11-12 years old, i must say...

1a is 1/10?
1b is 16.2?
lol.. I maths fail one.

1a is for not shaded
It's very simple. All that is needed to do is to merely count. 8/9 is the answer
1b even simpler. 162/9 = 18

1a there is a overlap lah, haha
1b also same thing, use the overlap

dun worry, you are not a tutor
It's a question that is simple beyond words.

ratio is 1:2, X = XX
take out 20 20-cent, change into 8 50-cent.
ratio becomes 1:1 X + 20 = XX - 8
X + 28 = XX
28 = X
go solve.
Q1. Don't be confused by the fractions, just treat A as a 6-units figure while B as a 4-units figure >> now you'll understand why 1/6 of A equals 1/4 of B
1a) By right A and B when combined should form a 10-units figure. However, since there is a overlap of 1 unit, the total area of the figure is only 9-units. Hence 8/9 of the figure is not shaded. Ans: 8/9
1b) since the figure has 9 units in total, 1 unit = 162/9 = 18cm2 >> given shaded area = 1 unit = 18cm2 >> Ans: 18cm2
Q2.
1. When eight 50c coins are taken out, the total value is $4. Changing the $4 will give you twenty 20c coins.
2. You took out eight 50c coins and put back twenty 20c coins, hence the new difference between the 2 type of coins = 20 + 8 = 28 coins
3. Since the new ratio is 1:2, and the new difference is 28 coins, that means there are now twenty-eight 50c coins and fifty-six 20c coins.
The amt of $$ in box = 28(0.5) + 56(0.2) = $25.20
Counter-Check:
Assuming you put back the eight 50c coins and remove the twenty 20c coins, there will now be 36 coins for each type. The total remains the same = 36(0.5) + 36(0.2) = $25.20
too cheem for kids . lol . wait till TS get .. sec3 final year E maths paper . cry !
2 circle overlap + use formale . and 3 marks only . damn it .
This qn, also dont knw? LOL. Are u smarter than a 5th grader?

Thing is, can be too cheem for kids, but these kind of questions should not be too cheem for a tutor
I'm damn pissed with tutors who are unsure of concepts and go out to harm students. It's much harder to unlearn things and relearn than to learn things right the first time round.

That's still ok for me, the cambridge papers are normally relatively easy.
maybe cos i'm more of a number person. I prefer to solve maths sums then to write essays!

If you are a tutor, I don't see any reason why you continue to tutor, yet cannot do the questions...
I do not lie I am a diploma holder and do not have a degree, I am totally ethical about my professionalism.
I believe everyone at times will be stuck at questions and need a proper explanation to the student.
I do not understand why you labelled me as other unethical tutor who just browse through txtbook when parents not around ,lying about qualificaitions and charges exorbitantly .
I have a sick mother with stroke and I am totally passionate about tuition .
So I dun see why ,with your qualifications , you can deny others from giving tuition as their job and deny a sick mother from eating right ?
I teach alot of levels ,because its by fate and I have no control on which level i can focused on .
I wish you well ,eagle .
One less piece of anger ,generates one more tonne of fortune for you
my forte is sec 3 ,sec 4 ,but i was turned down by parents who heard that I have average B grade for the O level ?
now does grades = ability to teach ?
I know of top student who cannot even explain concepts well on electronics and refused to share ,so pedagogical is a science and not a Art right ?
sometimes we do have question we are stuck and need to see in a different light on the p6 question .
We live within our ability ,not being superman to be the best of the best of the best.
Else setback or crisis comes , we will be like dejected cassette tapes , lost the ability to carry on in life

hey eagle, go easy on TS, the fact that he even bothers to ask for help instead of teaching the wrong stuff shows he is quite a responsible tutor
yup....peace all...
if one needs help; and if one is willing, just help unconditionally.
i guess the tutoring market will only thrive if one helps each other.
i think there's enuf share of the pie to go round.

Where did I do that
Nvm, I apologize for my outburst.
Shall share one more resource site with you
http://road-to-psle.blogspot.com
It's done by someone else, and it's a little bit similar to ExamWorld.
I have seen just too many tutors who are irresponsible, who cares much much more on money than for the student. On 2nd thoughts, and as what rafTiger has said, you are indeed responsible enough to go around finding and searching for the right solutions to teach. Sry about the earlier outburst.

cheers
Hi, Hope this helps

okok.
i hope you guys in homework forum can make friends with each other and share ideas with each other.
syncopation_music, my wish is also that you can come contribute some stuff in homework forum when you are free.
In this way we learn from each other and sharpen each other's teaching skills right? =)
