can a help a lost soul on this 2 questions? thanks!
1. ken is half as old as terry now. in 15yrs time, ken will be 5/7 as old as terry. how old is ken now?
2.transport company is paid to deliver 300 vases. it charges $25 for every vase delivered safely but pay $60 for every broken vase. the man paid $7245 in total. how many vases were delivered safely.
3.numer of apples in a basket is 180 more than 1/4 of total number of fruits. number of oranges is 100 more than 2/5 of total number of fruits. how many oranges are there if the basket only have apples and oranges.
thanks in advance!
draw a diagram
X = a box, Y is another box, mark 15 years
ken = X
terry = X X
15 years later...
ken = X Y
terry = X X Y
hence, X is 2/7 of terry's age. ==> Y is 3/7 of terry's age
==> 15 years is 3/7 of terry's age
==> 35 years is terry's current age
go figure out ken's age

if all safely delivered, 300 x $25 = $7500
difference between all delivered and amount paid = $7500 - $7245
= $255
amount loss by truck if one vase is broken = $25(uncollected pay) + $60(damages)
= $ 85
amount of vase broken = 255 divide by 85
= 3

diagram, X, Y and Z means box
total number of fruits = X X X X
number of apples = X + 180
total number of fruits = Y Y Y Y Y
number of oranges = Y Y +100
combine both into one diagram,
total number of fruits = Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z ====> 20 Z
number of apples = Z Z Z Z Z +180 ====> 5 Z +180
number of oranges = Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z +100 ====> 8 Z +100
total number of fruits = apples + oranges
20 Z = 5Z +180 + 8Z +100
7 Z = 280fruits
1 Z = 40 fruits
than can calculate oranges
thanks!
