Enhanced SingPass launching in July 2015

  To be ready in July 2015, the enhanced SingPass will include an improved user interface, mobile-friendly features and stronger security capabilities, such as Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for e-government transactions, particularly for those involving sensitive data. This could be a one-time "second factor" password delivered through Short Messaging Service (SMS) or OneKey token. 
  
  The enhanced SingPass will require users to complete the following steps:

  1. Update their SingPass account
     • Provide and verify mobile number and email address
       Users are to select their preferred mode of contact (SMS or email) so that they will receive SMS or email notifications whenever changes are made to their SingPass profile (e.g. password, mobile number, SingPass ID). 
       
       
     • Set up security questions and answers
       Users will be prompted to set up at least two security questions and answers. This is so that they can reset their passwords online easily by answering the security question.
  
  
  
  2. Set up their 2-step verification
     • Register for SMS or OneKey Token
       Users are to select their preferred mode of verification (SMS or OneKey token). This is to ensure that user's personal information and sensitive data are better protected with an additional layer of security. Upon successful registration, users will receive a pin mailer password/token within five working days.
       
       
     • Activate using pin mailer password
       After users have received their pin mailer password/token, they are to follow the instructions in the mailer to activate the 2-step verification function.
       
       
     • Link with SingPass account
       Once activated, users will be prompted to link their mobile phone/OneKey token with their SingPass account.

  Despite all these measures, users still need to take necessary precautions and adopt good cyber security habits to protect their personal information. The SingPass team always encourages users to:

  • Use strong passwords that are alphanumeric with 8-24 characters, preferably containing capital letters and symbols;
  • Change their password regularly; and
  • Keep their password and personal information confidential at all times -that means not sharing it with others.

  SingPass users face fresh woes after the first teething issues were resolved on Monday

   

   

  SINGAPORE - Fresh SingPass problems have surfaced after initial teething issues brought about by "heavy traffic" to the new authentication system were resolved on Monday.

  The enhanced SingPass was just rolled out on Sunday to better protect some 100 e-services - such as those which deal with personal, financial or health data - from 60 government agencies.

  But some users who had opted to use its new security feature - a one-time password (OTP) generated randomly on a calculator-like token or delivered by SMS - in addition to the usual SingPass and user name were left high and dry.

   

  As early as 8am on Wednesday morning, some users were complaining about not being able to link their token to the enhanced SingPass system on the latter's website.

  Others who had linked their phone number and token to the enhanced SingPass system complained they were locked out of e-government transactions on Tuesday night.

  The problem was due to not being able to receive the OTP via SMS despite making numberous requests for it to be sent.

  Frustrated, some users switched to using the token, but this message popped up on their computer screens after three failed attempts with the token-generated OTP: "You have entered an incorrect/expired one-time password. Please try again."

  On Monday, applicants for the new SingPass were unable to sign up for their enhanced accounts. Users who tried to access the SingPass website between 10am and noon were unable to do so. A message on the website said that maintenance was in progress.
