Where are you now?
If in France, guess what baby will speak.
If in Mexico, guess what baby will speak.
Come back Singapore, baby speak Singlish = English with Chinese sentence construction.
You must influence baby more, otherwise locality will influence baby. Where ever you are.
wouldn't the baby speak what he/she hears most? i.e. what the parents etc. use mostly?
uk dont have singapore international school? send to the preschool
TS, definately there is a chinese class in your foreign county right?
Do it in SG will damage your child's ability to speak mandarin as most of us (out there) are english speaking.
However you (as a parent) can do your part by influencing your child by watching more mandarin shows or drama (not those SG ones) from cable TVs or pop music.
TS i warn you though, if someone learns Chinese as their first language, they will have a lot of trouble learning English later.
What makes Chinese such a desirable language?
As someone who is proficient in the English language, I find Korean so much easier to understand.
Because there are vowels and consonants in Korean, a word is predictable, and once you've learned the vowels and consonants, you can basically 'write' any Korean character by ear.
If I'm not wrong, the same goes for Japanese.
Chinese is just such a mess.
Also, your children will probably have a better, uncorrupted view of politics and the political situation in Singapore should they be brought up abroad.
Social Studies is a joke subject. Just meant to stroke egos.

Out of the above mentioned, Japanese is the one most predictable. Other than that, Malay and Spanish is more predictable than Korean. You can basically 'write' any Malay by ear.
Korean is also quite predictable but less so than Malay, except for the fact that Korean has such finals combinations such as ㄺ, ㄳ, ㅄ, ㅀ, ㅅ, ㅈ and many more! that are not phonological as it seems to be.
Malay has only the problem which is between the high 'e' and the schwa 'e'.

No. and it is not just English. THis is because Chinese practically has no grammar, and is generally a messy language like what SBS7484P may have implied.

Chinese has lots of grammar. Read the books by Yip-Po Ching, linguist of Chinese grammar. Chinese without grammar or with little grammar is just a myth perpetuated by idiots.
TS, not to worry so much on this chinese issue. If you child is a chinese gene, she will pick up chinses fast. But need to talk to her more using mandrian instead of english..

LOL languages are not hereditary
jp and kr are new languages
so they are more structured and contain alot of borrowed words
languages with longer history and went thru many revolutions naturally more complex (the word is not messy)
some might notice that the standard of spoken and written english in sg is borderline atrocious...

That is an understatement, lol.
If teaching chinese to your baby is your priority, you can consider going to Taiwan or China.
The intonation of our local Mandarin .. .. . . . .
what has this topic got to do with SO anyway?
TS;: dont stress your kid in learning chinese, make it enjoyable or else it can be hell.
