LAMPARD HANDS CHELSEA WIN
Chelsea started their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win over Belgian side Anderlecht, thanks to Frank Lampard's driven free-kick 19 minutes into a low-key match.
More workmanlike than inspirational, Chelsea were thankful for contentious free-kick and a hideous goalkeeping error for the winner, as well as a stroke of luck when a deflected Anthony Vanden Borre shot beat Petr Cech but hit the post in the second half.
But, in truth, they dominated the game and were good value for their victory, even if it they are not yet reaching the heights of quality that Jose Mourinho's men represented after a similarly starchy start to their stellar last season.
Chelsea had shown their superior levels through the opening half, but were thankful to a howler from goalkeeper Daniel Zitka in handing them the lead.
Zitka had started impressively, turning away a Michael Essien volley from a tight angle and Damien Duff's drive from the aftermath.
Lampard had a half-chance that he skied - in stark contract to last season's heroics - and, on the break, Serhat should have done better after an incisive pass from Mbo M'penza.
Hannu Tihinen was close to getting on the end of a corner that caused chaos, but John Terry's inadvertent touch with an arm denied the visitor's an unlikely lead.
Finally the breakthrough came. A free-kick on the left side of the area was touched to Lampard who powered in a drive that Zitka should have saved comfortably but lost in flight and, rather embarrassingly, leapt past the ball before it rippled the net.
Anything but fluent, Chelsea kept to the job in hand - with the majestic looking partnership of Essien and Claude Makelele dictating play despite the hardworking but misfiring display of Lampard alongside them.
The England international was, at least, causing problems from set pieces and he nearly grabbed his second goal with a driven free-kick on the hour mark, only for Zitka to throw himself to his right to tip wide, somewhat theatrically.
It was another shot from range that very nearly caught Chelsea out for an equaliser soon after, handing the Premiership side a timely reminder that they could not expect an easy ride.
Vanden Borre's low drive looked comfortable for Cech, but a nasty deflection off Terry took the ball past the goalkeeper and off the face of the post, bouncing to a grateful Chelsea defence.
The scare signalled the arrival of Shaun Wright-Phillips from the substitutes' bench and he immediately had an impact down the right.
Didier Drogba's tenacity nearly handed Lampard a second goal two minutes from time, only for the midfielder to be denied by a fine piece of defending from Yves Vanderhaeghe - getting across at the critical juncture.
Essien could have then capped his fine display with a goal, but fired narrowly wide as the game ticked into injury time.
So, another good day's work for Chelsea, and you can't help but feel that, when the football starts flowing, this is a side that will be feared by pretty much anybody.

PERFECT CHELSEA SINK ADDICKS
Chelsea put an end to Charlton's perfect start to the season, and ensured their own continued with a 2-0 win at The Valley.
Chelsea were made to fight for their win, but their quality shone through and, after hitting the woodwork twice, goals from Hernan Crespo and Arjen Robben ensured that Jose Mourinho's 100 per cent record remained intact.
The first half had been a mixed bag of half chances and missed opportunities - with Chelsea starting strongly but forced to compete by their plucky hosts.
Michael Essien had chipped an early effort over when well placed, but it was Frank Lampard's slightly deflected volley soon after that had Stephan Andersen scrambling to ensure the ball was outside his right-hand post.
Lampard, celebrating his 100th consecutive start, whipped in a ball that evaded everyone, and Robben stung Anderson's palms with a drive, whilst at the other end Jerome Thomas snatched at Charlton's first chance, dragging his shot wide.
Crespo could, and should, have opened the scoring when he lively Essien dispossessed a plodding Radostin Kishishev and put the Argentine through.
However, Crespo clipped the ball past Andersen and off of the face of the post and the best chance of the opening half went begging.
Essien had a shot well blocked and a backwards header drop wide, whilst Dennis Rommedahl was disappointed when a powerful drive just missed the target.
The second half saw Chelsea strike the woodwork for the second time, a Lampard free-kick dropped perfectly for the Frenchman at the far post, but he reacted slowly and could only shin the ball against the post.
Andersen continued his impressive performance when he reacted well to a deflected Lampard frew-kick to gather, and it was Chelsea in the ascendancy.
A goal seemed inevitable, and so it proved - Essien dispossessed Kishishev for the third time in the match and picked out a fine cross that Crespo nodded past Andersen superbly.
Darren Bent twice found himself offside, the second time drawing a fine save from Cech before noticing the flag, but in the flash of an eye it was 2-0.
Robben was the scorer, skipping into the space afforded at the edge of the box by Damien Duff's run and curling brilliantly home with his left foot.
The goal ripped the guts out of Charlton's game plan, and the heart out of the contest, with Chelsea happy to wait for the chances and Chalrton unable to bully their way back into the match.
Lampard had a shot wide and Essien should have done better with an unhurried cut-back, but otherwise it was merely the triumphant posturings of a Chelsea side that know that they are good enough to beat anybody.

CHELSEA SURGE AHEAD AS RIVALS STUTTER
Title rivals Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all dropped points as champions Chelsea stormed further ahead at the top of the Premiership on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho's men are now six points clear from Charlton in second place, though perhaps more crucially they now lie 10 points ahead of Manchester United, 11 of Arsenal and a massive 14 clear of Liverpool.
A Frank Lampard double gave Chelsea a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, though they were made to work hard by Aston Villa, Luke Moore firing the visitors ahead in the 44th minute with the first league goal against the champions this season.
But Lampard quickly equalised with the first of his double strike, curling a free-kick around the visitors' wall and past Thomas Sorensen, and then earned the three points with a second-half penalty.
At Old Trafford, United were stunned by two Morten Gamst Pedersen goals; the first a fluke, the second a stunning finish.
Pedersen gave Blackburn a shock half-time lead when his free-kick from the right flank eluded everyone and bounced past Edwin van der Sar and into the far corner.
Wayne Rooney's introduction as a second-half substitute inspired United's equaliser, his 20-yard shot was palmed out to Ruud van Nistelrooy, with the Dutchman poking home to bring the two sides level.
But Pedersen blasted Blackburn ahead 10 minutes from time, after Michael Gray's pass found him in space.
Charlton strengthened their grip on second place after a fifth win in six matches, earning a four-point cushion in second after beating West Brom 2-1.
Danny Murphy scored both for the Addicks in the first half, and though West Brom pulled one back through recent signing Curtis Davies they could not find an equaliser.
Arsenal dropped two points when they were held to an entertaining but goalless draw in their London derby against West Ham at Upton Park.
Cesc Fabregas missed the best chance for Arsenal, while Yossi Benayoun forced Jens Lehmann to make a decent stop just after the restart and substitute Bobby Zamora headed wide late on to spare Arsenal an even worse afternoon.
At the other end of the table, Everton, experiencing a turgid start to their season, lost 1-0 at home to Wigan and now have just three points from six games.
Wigan, after a second-half Damien Francis winner, are on 10 points and looking full value for their place in the top half of the table.
Meanwhile, England striker Michael Owen was on target for a second successive weekend as Newcastle beat Manchester City 1-0 at St James' Park.
In the day's earlier fixture, Birmingham midfielder Neil Kilkenny was sent off on his Premiership debut as Djibril Cisse's penalty rescued a point for Liverpool, who drew 2-2 at St Andrews. -

JOSE READY FOR REDS REMATCH
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is not giving too much credence to last season's UEFA Champions League visit to Anfield as he prepares his side to face Liverpool in Europe once again.
A hotly-disputed Luis Garcia goal gave The Reds a 1-0 win and a place in last season's final but Mourinho has highlighted the New Year's day victory as proof Chelsea can win at Anfield.
"In April we lost but in January we won," the Portuguese tactician said.
"So we know that we can win there, although we also know we can lose there.
"They are enjoyable matches. These big matches you enjoy more."
Chelsea were boosted by the 2-1 win over Aston Villa which sees them already ten points clear of chief rivals Manchester United and Arsenal after they dropped points to Blackburn and West Ham respectively at the weekend.
"If you know that they lost points then it's good because the distance is bigger in this moment.
"If we make a mistake and lose a game we have a distance."
Frank Lampard, who scored both goals in Saturday's win at Stamford Bridge, admits that back-to-back matches at Anfield - the champions also travel to Merseyside in the league on Sunday - will be a tough proposition.
"We are ready for Liverpool but they will be two very tough games, we know that," said Lampard.
"Going to Anfield is always difficult and going there twice in a week even more so.
"We look ready for it and we want to get the right results.
"It was a deafening noise last season and it will be the same this week so we will have to be ready." -

LIVERPOOL 0 - 0 CHELSEA
Liverpool and Chelsea cancelled each other out in a Champions League stalemate at Anfield.
Rafael Benitez's side enjoyed more possession, but Liverpool's Jose Reina was the busier goalkeeper.
He saved well from Frank Lampard and Arjen Robben in the first half, while Liverpool were angry a succession of penalty appeals were rejected.
Xabi Alonso tested Chelsea's Petr Cech with a long-range drive late on, but failed to break the deadlock.
Liverpool played a more attacking formation than in recent times, drafting in Djibril Cisse to provide support for Peter Crouch up front.
But it was a cagey first half containing few chances, with Liverpool taking the early initiative but Chelsea battling back as the interval approached.
Liverpool keeper Reina needed to be alert, diving to his right to divert Lampard's free-kick before the England midfield man dragged a left-foot shot wide from a good position.
The holders enjoyed plenty of possession but failed to open up the Chelsea rearguard, although they were unhappy appeals for a penalty were waved away when Sami Hyypia went down under challenge from Didier Drogba.
Reina was in action again after 32 minutes as Robben embarrassed Hyypia for pace, diving acrobatically to turn a rising drive over the bar.
Liverpool had further claims for a spot-kick waved away by Italian referee Massimo de Santis six minutes after the break when Luis Garcia appeared to be tugged by Paulo Ferreira, but contact was minimal.
And there were similar appeals minutes later when William Gallas stopped Jamie Carragher's goalbound header with his hand, but the referee ruled it was accidental.
Liverpool were dominating, and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made a move to stem the tide after 64 minutes, sending on Shaun Wright-Phillips for the disappointing Robben.
A mix-up between Carragher and Hyypia almost let in Damien Duff, but Reina came to the rescue.
Chelsea then made another change, sending on Hernan Crespo - on the losing side for AC Milan against Liverpool in last season's final - for Duff.
Xabi Alonso gave Petr Cech a rare moment of serious anxiety with seven minutes left, but his volley flew straight into the arms of the Chelsea keeper.
