Share your experience on the Great Wall of China

For me .. I always remember the place to be very steep and they took a photo proving I've been to the Great Wall.

This is certainly a wonder of the world I want to visit someday. Ever heard the saying: "Bu2 dao4 chang2 cheng2 fei1 hao3 han4"?

Personally I felt that this part of the Great Wall has undergone too many refurbishing and commercialize to the extend I find it a little fake like our Tang Dynasty.
If one really wants to immerse in the real thing--The real authentic Great Wall of China, I suggest trekking from Jin Shan Lin to Si Ma Tai...
Simply Superb. Authentic and Breathtaking views.... Take note, Dangerous as well since it has never been touch up. -

My first experience of it was to correct myself that its not the great WALL of china but the great STAIRCASE of china.. piangz... maciam like staircase climbing up up up so steep!
But I climb to quite high then took out a can of pringles potato chips, sit there and eat. Quite shiok. -

I cheated, I took cable car
Actually most places you gotta take a cable car up to the wall... and then you scamper around on it, up and down the steps. Which I did
I been to two parts - one part of the wall that's more touristy, accessible from Beijing
The other is a portion in Suzhou area. That was pretty interesting, can see old forts -
I have been there twice.
First time, driven there in my customer's Lexus, chauffered and all....
Very impressed and had the feeling of awe, even before we reach the entrance.
Walked up the steps and saw a bunch of Chinese kids running down.... wondered.... hmm.... that looks easy....
On the way down, realised that going down is more difficult than going up. One wrong step and you'd just reach the bottom fast.
Second time with the wifey. Spent a good 3+ hrs up and down. Bought the touristy certificate of being in Great Wall.... Made a call back home in one of the turrets.
Would luv to go back there again. -

i walked to the part where its crumbling away. I remember there was dog n donkey poo all over. But I do have a thing for ancient buildings and ruins. They hold this sort of 'life force', this essence of the ages, that somehow draws me to them.Originally posted by Icemoon:as above.

But Great Wall not very "historical" 'cos they almost never use it for its original purpose. Other than the David Copperfield stunt a few years back, what is most memorable about the Great Wall, can anyone tell me? -

I remember from map of the Warring States the Kingdom of Chu used to have Great Wall. Not sure if it is the same thing.
Since the Great Wall is used to defend against the northern barbarians .. there is no reason subsequent dynasties build Great Wall in the south? -

I went to Ba Da Ling when I was in Primary Four...
It was super steep, took me nine horse two cows strength to climb up! I had to cling on to the sides all the time, and I didn't even manage to reach the top cos it was so scary. And I even cried my way descending it.
But then hor! I saw this fella descending from the top. I think there were railings or something there, so maybe he was sitting on the railing but anyway, he was zooming down at a fast speed!
