By October, a new mobile parking application on trial among public sector officers and their networks will be rolled out to the general public — saving motorists the hassle of fumbling with parking coupons.Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong cited the parking.sg app as an example of how the authorities are working on small projects which help people learn about and adapt to new technology in everyday life — and get them ready for bigger changes down the road. Singapore has to continue pressing ahead with such projects in a changing world, Mr Lee said in his National Day Rally speech on Sunday (Aug 20). “Unless we change with it, we will fall behind. And Singapore must always stay among with the leaders to attract talent and business to live up to our own expectations of what we ought to be and can be new businesses, as we have always done,” he added.The parking app, announced about three months ago, was first tested by public sector officers at selected public car parks in the city that use paper coupons. The second phase of tests, which began this month, involves public sector officers who may ask their friends and family to test out the service.The URA, HDB and GovTech told TODAY that more than 4,000 public officers and their friends and family have taken part in the trials so far with “no major issues”. All public carparks that use parking coupons — numbering about 1,150 — are now involved, up from more than 80 carparks when the trial began in May.Acting on feedback from public officers, the agencies have added new features, including notification alerts and parking history. More than nine in 10 trial participants surveyed had indicated that they preferred using the app to parking coupons, the agencies added.The app, which uses the Global Positioning System and is meant as an alternative to paper coupons, negates the need for drivers to return to their cars to replenish coupons to extend their parking sessions.Motorists just have to key in their vehicle number, choose a car park, indicate the duration of parking and pay via a credit or debit card. Fees are based on the length of time a car is parked on a per-minute basis.“The app will alert you when your session is about to end. If you want to park longer, you can extend your session remotely … before the parking lady puts a summons on you,” Mr Lee said.Elsewhere, businesses are also responding to the explosion of e-commerce as technology transforms traditional retail. While delivery services like Amazon Prime Now have gained popularity, Mr Lee noted that online retailers are also starting brick-and-mortar shops.Amazon, for instance, recently opened a “drive-up” grocery store in Seattle, United States, where consumers can collect goods they bought online at a time of their choosing. A licence plate reader registers a customer’s arrival and the groceries are taken to the car. The service is “not available here yet, but perhaps (it’s) not so far away”, said Mr Lee who noted that traditional businesses must reinvent themselves and tap technology to provide users with greater efficiency and convenience.At home supermarkets have had self-service counters for some time. NTUC FairPrice has even opened an unmanned, cashless Cheers convenience store at Nanyang Polytechnic.As Singapore forges ahead with its vision to be a Smart Nation, engineers, programmers, data analysts and technicians are needed, the PM said. Noting the global shortage of such professionals and skills, he said the country must build its talent pool urgently.

If you drive, you likely know the feeling of having parked and then realizing you’re out of coupons. And when your coupon runs out and you’re still not done, you’ve probably debated between walking back to your car to tear a new coupon, or just take a chance and hope you don’t get caught.
Thanks to a new parking app that co-developed by HDB (Housing Development Board) and URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority) with the help of GovTech, those worries may soon go the way of the road tax paper disc.
The new Parking.sg app lets you key in your vehicle number after parking, select the car park, and choose an intended parking duration. The app will charge you on a per-minute basis, and you’ll get a refund if you end the session ahead of time.
Image source: Parking.sgSimilarly, you’ll get an alert if your session is ending, and you can choose to extend your parking period. You need to enter a parking duration to prevent yourself from being overcharged if you forget to end the session and drive off. In that case, the charges will automatically stop once the duration ends. Currently Parking.sg accepts payment via Visa and MasterCard debit and credit cards.
The Parking.sg app was announced last night by Prime Minister Lee at the National Day Rally. It’s already gone through its first round of testing and will be launched in October on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. However, if you sign up for the trial (cars only for now) and get selected, you’ll also be able to download and try out the app.
(Although it’s not called Parking.sg if you download the trial, but Streetsmart Driver. Perhaps Streetsmart Driver is just for the trial before the public release.)
The trial version is named ‘Streetsmart Driver’ on the Google Play Store.While the government has been steadily installing electronic entry gantries at public car parks to reduce the use of parking coupons, there are still more than 1,000 car parks that require the paper coupons. And while you can install gantries at big car parks, you can’t do the same for the individual lots that line small streets. The new app should help free drivers from the hassle of parking coupons at those car parks.

New app for paying car parking fees available from Oct 1
Car drivers can download and use the new parking mobile application to pay their car parking fees at all 1,100 public car parks requiring paper coupons from Sunday (Oct 1).
Motorists just have to key in their vehicle number, enter the car park code, indicate the duration of parking and pay via a credit or debit card. Fees are based on the length of time a car is parked on a per-minute basis.
The app will also notify users when their parking sessions expire, allow drivers to extend their parking sessions remotely, and to view their parking history.
The parking.sg app, first announced in May this year, is available for download from both the Apple App and Google Play stores, said the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Housing Development Board (HDB) and GovTech Singapore in a joint statement on Friday.
However, its use will be limited to car drivers for a start, though it will be extended to motorcycles and heavy vehicles by the end of the year.
The app can be used at all 1,100 public car parks requiring paper coupons, and the car park code can be found on the main signboard at the entrance of public car parks, including prominent locations along kerbside car parks.
Additional signage have also been installed by the URA and HDB to enhance the visibility of the car park code – a mandatory field in the app.
Motorists who wish to use their paper coupons may continue to do so, the agencies added.
Tested in two phases since May, with the most recent trials ending in September, more than 15,000 public sector officers and selected members of the public gave their feedback to create the final version of the app that will be released on Sunday.
The agencies said that enforcement checks will still be conducted, and remind motorists to activate the app when they park.
