EASY Taxi, a mobile taxi-booking application introduced here last December, has raised US$40 million in Series D funding for growth in Asia and Latin America.
Series D, in venture capital (VC) terms, refers to the fourth stage in the financing cycle for start-ups. It follows Series A, B and C in this order, and is usually quite significant in sum.
This takes total funding to-date to some US$100 million for the app, founded three years ago in Brazil. Today, it is available in 33 countries across Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.
The latest funding is led by new investor Phenomen Ventures - a US$300 million Russian VC firm - with participation from Tengelmann Ventures, the venture arm of German retail group Tengelmann.
"First off, we are thrilled with this news since it clearly shows the confidence new investors have in Easy Taxi. This also means there is high expectation for us to continue our great performance," Jianggan Li, co-founder and managing director of Easy Taxi Singapore, told The Business Times.
Mr Li said the money will allow the company to invest more in key areas such as people, product improvement, big data analytics and partnerships. "More importantly, it will allow us to expand even more in the region (Asia)."
What this ultimately means to Singapore Easy Taxi passengers and drivers is a better travelling experience, said Mr Li.
Corporate solutions, cashless payment, a revamped app and an integrated lifestyle portal are some of the new features users can look forward to. Just two weeks ago, Easy Taxi partnered WeChat to let users book taxis - from any of the seven taxi operators here - directly via the messaging app.
To attract users, Easy Taxi is offering passengers a S$5 discount on taxi fares, and taxi drivers an additional S$1 in earnings for every booking made through WeChat, till tomorrow.
"The promotion has been very well-received; response has been overwhelming. We receive thousands of booking requests on a daily basis," claimed Mr Li.
Since the partnership with WeChat was announced, Easy Taxi has also seen significant growth in its WeChat following, engagement and usage, and says it will follow up with a new campaign to keep the momentum going. It claims to now have some 185,000 drivers in its network, and complete "millions of rides" monthly across 160 cities in 30 countries worldwide.
In comparison, GrabTaxi, another taxi-booking player in Singapore, says it is the second largest taxi network here, with 270,000 users per month and 1.5 million downloads across six Asian countries since its launch in 2012. It declined to reveal exact fleet and ride figures.
GrabTaxi, backed by Temasek's Vertex Venture Holdings, has also secured more than US$25 million in VC funding, including a US$15 million Series B sum and an undisclosed "eight-figure" Series A sum in the past two years.
