Hi all,
I don't own a car so I have been taking taxis extensively, especially when with my family. It was until recently that I started learning about Uber and GrabCar, and decided to go ahead and try them.
For those who are interested, here's my personal experience with both apps. Your experience could be different, so feel free to give your own feedback too.
GRABCAR
A new service offered by GrabTaxi, with the main difference that the vehicle that picks you up will not be a taxi, but a 'private' car with a driver who most likely doesn't have a taxi vocational license.
90% of my rides were in Toyota vehicles, others being Honda. Similarly, 90% of the cars are rented instead of owned, one reason being the high cost involved in converting a personal vehicle's insurance to a commercial one (heard premium is 1.6k to 2k per year). Car condition wise, very clean and comfortable. No complaint at all.
90% of the drivers I've met are young (less than 30), one reason being that GrabCar's criteria is as long as you own the driving license and have passed the 1-year 'P' Plate, you are eligible to be a GrabCar driver. This can be a pro or con, as younger drivers are more lively and chatty, and less likely to bore you with politics and the like. They are usually less familiar with the routes though, and rely heavily on GPS. This wouldn't be much of a problem if you are not rushing for time however, as the fares are calculated and fixed upfront, before you have even called for a GrabCar.
With this fare structure, you have the freedom to decide if you wish to take Uber/Taxis (fares are run on a meter) or GrabCar. Fares for shorter routes are more or the less the same, while for longer routes, GrabCar could be more expensive than Uber/Taxis.

UBER
Uber has been around in Singapore longer than GrabCar, so it seems that they are more Uber drivers than GrabCar, though more drivers are using both apps to look for passengers (both companies' did not seem to restrict them from doing so).
As such, Uber drivers are generally older and more experienced with the roads, since they must be at least 25 years old and have 3 years of driving experience to join Uber. This would be an advantage when you need to get to a place as soon as possible and avoid jams or heavy traffic, especially when Uber fares are calculated based on distance and time traveled.
Besides the fare structure, another significant difference between Uber and GrabCar is that Uber requires a Credit Card for registration. On the positive side, this means that transactions are cashless and will be very handy when you are out of cash and need a quick ride home. It may also mean registered passengers could be lesser so driver-to-passenger ratio should be higher, meaning that it's easier for a passenger to successfully get a Uber car.
Like GrabCar, Uber does not have peak hour surcharges, so their fares would be cheaper than taxis during those times. How Uber compensates the lack of peak hours is by something called 'Surge', where the fares will be more expensive by a certain percentage (will be indicated on your app before you book) when your vicinity has a high demand for Uber bookings during that time.

Until Uber takes out personal accident insurance and accepts full liability for driver misdemeanor, I will not use your app to book any rides. Your surge charging fare is enough to cover a full day car rental, so it makes no sense. You expect to be paid 20% of the fares and accept zero liability. Compulsory credit card payment is a no no. Not everyone got a credit card so your business is limited to these people - not too poor and not too rich.

SINGAPORE - A new transport app promises to book you a taxi in the Central Business District (CBD) during the evening rush hours in a shorter time and for a lower fare, if you share your ride with others.
The Pair Taxi app, which launches on Thursday (Nov 5), matches up to three passengers at a taxi stand to one cab, and whose destinations are within 2km of one another.
The service will start in the evening at two taxi stands in the Tanjong Pagar area - at International Plaza and Capitol Tower.
The plan is to extend it to up to 20 CBD locations later.
Over 100 taxi drivers have signed up with Pair Taxi so far. Commuters can download the app on Thursday. With it, they input their booking requests and destination. They are then matched up with other passengers at the two initial taxi stands.

Karhoo (to be launched next year):An app enabling commuters to pick a cab or private-hire car across firms, based on criteria such as cost, arrival time and vehicle type.
While Pair Taxi joins the likes of GrabTaxi, Hailo, MoobiTaxi and Uber Taxi, its founder Andy Zheng says there is a difference.
The 30-year-old managing director of Aspiring Citizens Cleantech, the start-up behind the app, said: "The other apps are focused on increasing the supply; we are focused on increasing the efficiency.
"We want to transport more commuters with the same numbers in the existing taxi fleet, and are also targeting the peak hour problem."
He believes sending more taxis into the city during the peak hour will only create a gridlock, and is also an inefficient use of resources if each cab takes only one passenger.
Pair Taxi has incentives for both drivers and passengers, he said.
In the app's fare-splitting system, a trip shared among two passengers can be up to 50 per cent cheaper, and up to 66 per cent, if shared between three parties, depending on the trip distance and time. Cabbies stand to make between $2 and $5 more for the ride.
Payments are made in the app via credit card, so passengers can be dropped off in quick succession. If a passenger cannot be matched with others, a taxi will still be sent to him, and the fare will charged as a normal ride with booking fees.
Mr Henry Wee, 53, who has been a cabby for 10 years, said: "It's more efficient to pick up two to three passengers in a go and do a longer trip. Once I go out of the CBD during the peak hour, I won't come back because I have to pay the ERP."
Asked about Pair Taxi, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it has advised the company to register with the authority and to comply with the Third-Party Taxi Booking Service Providers Act, a regulatory framework to protect consumers' interest in terms of pricing and service standards. The laws were passed in May and will take effect later this year.
The LTA had launched a Share-a-Cab initiative in 1997 but it was discontinued as "most commuters were reluctant to share a taxi with strangers", said a spokesman.
However, Dr Zheng believes taxi sharing deserves a second try. "Now we have better map technology, cashless payments, and smooth smartphone-based user interface."
"With a new tool, commuters may re-examine their choices. On the one hand, you have to wait at the taxi stand for a long time, or you cannot book a taxi. On the other hand, you share a taxi, you get it faster and maybe make new friends," he said.

All these taxi app developers never hire a taxi driver as consultant. The cabby at most download and try it out for a while, once they realised end up earning less, will just delete. Cabbies are always looking for new pax, but once pob, we try to dump the pax asap, unless its a return journy from sua teng to town. So cabbies will only use this app in rural areas. No cabby in his right mind will use this app during peak hrs in CBD, which is when people are rushing for a cab, and when there are very few green laterns.

Cannot said lah, now and last time, alot of different, last time up taxis only 0.80cts, today, $3++, many cheapo paxs on the road you know, and no sooner, if cabbies dun take, apps ride will take over. Si ani kuan one lah, but those regular taxi paxs will certainly not want to share or pair, as they took taxis because of having privacy, comfort and one way, that is why they are willing to pay for it, share or pair will defeat that purpose. Anyway, times are bad and getting worst, even casket prices are slashing to bottom lines, too competitive liao, somemore, many are reluctant to die, or very hard to die..knn. Same like this forum, even mods hv to do side line to promote apps ride..haiz..bo adv, bo Pee member..si ani kuan one lah

The opposite of no good biz is good biz! Fireice wu $50 for me to tong bo? I will take and buy a sgforum premium account. I think bowah, KTC and ct2200 need $5k - $10k to tong. Not sure why they need so much leh? One need to standby his own casket money, another need to run his pa bao chia side biz and the last one need a good holiday bah..
