New app offers cab firms response to Uber, GrabTaxi
Another ride-booking app is coming to town. But instead of going head-on with taxi companies, London- and New York-based Karhoo wants to work with cab operators "to level the playing field".
Started by British entrepreneur Daniel Ishag, 41, Karhoo has been in talks with most of the taxi companies here to create a journey aggregator commuters can tap into.
"We are really excited about launching in Singapore in the first quarter of next year," he told The Straits Times via e-mail.

Three in five people here do not use third-party taxi apps, a public opinion survey company found.
According to YouGov's recent online poll of 1,929 respondents, 1,122 were non-users.
Nearly half said this was because they are not sure how they they are charged for the trip, with a quarter citing concerns over payment security as credit card details are stored in the apps. Some cited the higher fares of rides provided by these apps, while others said they simply did not trust the app providers.
The poll found that app users tended to be single, younger, better educated and bigger earners.
Experts said the poll could have a sampling bias as it was done entirely online. The poll also found that 73 per cent of taxi rides made last month were via street hails.
Karhoo's app is supposed to allow commuters to pick a cab or a private-hire car across companies, based on criteria such as cost, time of arrival and type of vehicle.
SIM University's adjunct associate professor, Dr Park Byung Joon, said Karhoo may not be very unique technologically, but the fact that it is tying up with taxi companies might give it an edge.
"The others like Uber and GrabTaxi sign up individual drivers. But in Karhoo's case, if a taxi company agrees, it has the entire fleet on board," Dr Park said.
ComfortDelGro Corp, the largest taxi operator with nearly 60 per cent of the 28,500 cab here, told The Straits Times yesterday that it was "in talks with Karhoo for a possible tie-up", but added that discussions were still "in early stages".
Trans-Cab, the second-largest taxi firm here, said it was also exploring joining hands with Karhoo.
Its general manager, Ms Jasmine Tan, said: "It is something extra to help our own despatch system. If passengers can accept it, we can give it a try."
Prime Taxi, the smallest player here, is in talks with Karhoo, too.
But Premier Taxi managing director Lim Chong Boo said Karhoo has to do more to convince players to go on board. "I don't think we need another app per se. Unless they come up with a novel plan, it's just going to be another Grab or Uber," he said.
SMRT, however, is not in talks with Karhoo, having tied up with London-based app provider Hailo last year.
Karhoo says it has already signed up 200,000 vehicles in London, New York and Singapore.
Mr Ishag, the man behind British water-treatment company Bluewater Bio, had told the Financial Times that by working with taxi companies, Karhoo will avoid the regulatory pitfalls faced by groups such as Uber.
"We're able to work in markets where the peer-to-peer networks aren't allowed to work simply because we empowered the incumbents," he said.
In Singapore, which has not adopted a protectionist stance against taxi apps, Karhoo may have a harder time.
Tech consultant Richard Ho, 55, said: "I've never had a problem getting a taxi with GrabTaxi. So this company has to be much more than an aggregator for it to make people switch."

Topic Grabcar drivers are pwning Grabtaxi Drivers as well.
How?
Very simple scenario: im a grabcar driver ,on the other side i will find a friend to attach myself as a relief driver to their cab. So now i have 2 phones , 1 grabtaxi , 1 grabcar. So when i bid for grabtaxi jobs , i will call pax up and say im coming in a private car. Fare follow the app or throw in a discount off the fare. Pax agree means 1 trip earn , best of all only pay 40 cents levy instead of 20%.
So now i have best of both worlds , 2 apps working for me . I get to pwn taxi drivers gao gao and save $ in levy as well. Why not?
This is what all these grabcar drivers are doing, song bo taxi drivers?
Since Fireice always 'suspiciously' locks my thread when it comes to exposing grab's intentions and motives, ok i shall repost in here in this deep pile of junk where it will probably garner a smaller audience.

When you want to Drive GRAB Car and UBer.
1. Go over to GRAB Car (GRAB Car office and UBer Office next to each other.)
2. Pay them $120 for them to help you to registered your company.
3. Take your ROC and go to E2 or LCR to rent a car.
(Both Co under Uber, their 2 Director are oso Uber Director)
4. Chose a car, Maybe you can take a 8.5 Years Toyota Altis at $500 Per week.
5. Deposit $1000, Contract for 6 Mths, So you pay $1500, Them they will give you the car Log card and Insurance.
6. Go back to GRAB Car.
7. Show them your Log card etc, they will need to inspect your car.
8. Pay them $100 or $150 for your call Levy and they will help you to registered as GRAB Car Driver and Installed the Apps. Now you can start taking GRAB car call.
9. You can go back to Uber to get them to registered as Uber X Driver and Installed the Apps.. Now you can start taking Uber X call.
As a new Bird, I suggest you every day start at 7am and drive all the way to 8pm.
Everyday You should able to take 18~20 GRAB Call (About 4~6 Rush Hr Call)
Everyday Your Fare collection should be $210~$240
Total Fare per week $220 x 7 => $1540Rental Per week $500
$1540 Collection, GRAB Car take 20% Levy => $308.

You mentioned that Grab makes 20% or $308 per week but gives out $600 incentives. Are there other fees that you have to pay because they seem like making a loss every week when you do not consider their profit from rental ($500/7=$71.40 per day).

Bro NT, In the case of my explanation, you are renting your car from E2.
Which is a Car Rental company wholly owned by 2 Uber Director. (Accoridng to ACRA record).
If you are taking your car from GRAB Car, you are ONLY allow to take GRA Car call.
But if you get your car from E2 (Uber related company), you can take call from GRAB Car and Uber.

Minus food and expenses and everything, he has earned $280+++ for this best day. Other days would be lesser of course. Mind you, he made this hard earned money during the graveyard shift when everyone is either sleeping or partying and on a WEEKEND!
This proved that a taxi driver's earnings is capped. He can only earn this much. There are no further increments and such unless Government changes the fare or the rent gets lower. Only these factors. Hence, you tell me whether there is a future being a taxi driver or not. There is no increment or job security, no bonus, no medical leave or privileges, no holiday, no personal leave, no interaction, dangerous, long hours, unholy hours and unhealthy + tiring. The only advantage is freedom which isn't good enough to offset all these disadvantages.
So, you tell me, bang table and tell me being a taxi driver is good. This job is only for the old, retired or desperate or all 3 in 1. If chance appears, better get out and get a normal job which is more conducive for humans.

No lah, TD is best for partimer, extra income for them, if go full time, abit tiring, can easily up lorry one. Comparing to my casket 2 trips, 8hrs per day already $300 net + free curry chicken, free drinks, free groundnut, free kuay chee, free chio bu to see, + tips. And our job also not so complicated and only drive up and down the most 6-8 times, morning pick, send, then pick again, send to house, afternoon another pax, pick and send only.
