GrabTaxi gets 8-figure sum funding
Vertex Venture Holdings, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings, is leading a group of angel investors in Malaysia to inject additional funding into start-up GrabTaxi.
SINGAPORE: Vertex Venture Holdings, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings, is leading a group of angel investors in Malaysia to inject additional funding into start-up GrabTaxi.
Vertex Venture says "an eight-figure US dollar sum" is being invested, without giving exact figures.
The stakeholders have declined to reveal the exact funding amount as it deems it a competitive information.
GrabTaxi runs a third-party mobile booking app by the same name.
It now covers 12 cities in five countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
GrabTaxi says the additional funding will enable it to expand into new markets in the region.
The start-up plans to channel the funds into hiring engineers and coders, deepening its presence in existing markets and customising new features for different cities.
GrabTaxi says that since its launch in Malaysia two years ago, the app has been downloaded onto over one million mobile devices.
It now has more than 20,000 taxi drivers registered on its network regionally.
In Singapore, GrabTaxi says it has the second largest fleet, second to incumbent ComfortDelGro.
It adds that over 250,000 people in the region use the app at least once a month.
The business has caught the eye of venture capital firm Vertex Venture Holdings, which is looking for what's known as disruptive innovations.
This refers to improvements to products and services that displace existing market or technology.
Vertex Venture highlighted some key challenges for Singapore start-ups
Its president and CEO, Chua Kee Lock, said: "We are seeing more people asking us to consider investment. The challenge for us is that we have a relatively high bar.
"We want to look for something truly disruptive, no point investing in something that is incremental.
"For our start-ups, the immediate challenge for them is beyond the home market. They have to think of Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia...it means more money, more human resource and a lot more execution."
Vertex Venture has invested in over 400 companies around the world since its inception in 1988.

All these apps are preying on drivers who might not have calls and wanted something of so called IT savey upgrade driver, but at the end of the day, nothing is for free, commerically, nobody will invest on something with no return, it can be good or bad because they know that in this market, there are desparate paxs and drivers

There are hundreds of taxi apps in overseas, especially from china, india and many other 3rd world whereby their taxis system are not well organised like us, our companies MDT and operation system is one model that many other countries failed to catch up, because of the need of resources and corruption, it can hardly put the system right. So come in all these kind of apps to help the taxi driver to get pax, locate pax and get booking, which is relevant to them, especially when you are in a country whereby taxis are mostly privately own or run by private family. But here, especially in the context of big companies like SMRT and CDG, all these apps are secondary

You paid a rental for a taxis consist of many stuffs, not just the taxi alone, the rental include insurance, road tax, MDT and all it software licence rights, and that is more than enuf, many had said, drive taxis no life, easily tired and also must be alert at all time, if not kenna this and that fines etc. Already the MDT giving us headache, what must press no, then go to the fare, then must print, then must remember to put printing paper, then must understand the MDT secret here and there, plus lousy pax, lousy trip, lousy day...sure tired lah, still got time to go play with taxi apps?? surf porn better lah

The altitude of the TD is knn type....
Than if call comfort, complain still can get voucher, knn use this app, complain to who?.....

On the hindsight, Apps do help cabbies, the more the merrier, because it add competition to taxi companies, especially so like Cdg with 16,000 cabs on the road, they will the king of call, but now, they have to re establish themselves, because these apps, especially like with apps like Grabtaxi which my former chief is using is the second largest usage according to statistic. With competition among players, as drivers, there is an advantage to play with, and that is also why cdg is rethinking about it calls, went into bidding system, and at time their call now provide destination that they were so reluctant to give when TD ask for it. Cdg do charge higher rental with lesser benefit like rebates, but their call, good IT infrastructual and administration is what attract many to join in, but if their call is being threatened, they may be facing many throwing keys and opts for cheaper rental cab with lesser call and use apps like Grabtaxi to get paxs, which is getting popular and cheaper.

Pax only want taxi fast, but fast also must have certain level of service standard from the TD.....
Pax are free to use whatever sources in order to get themselves a taxi.....
But as a TD, think again, is all this app necessary?.....

M1 partners GrabTaxi in first-ever carrier billing service for cab drivers
SINGAPORE - Cab drivers in Singapore who use GrabTaxi, a taxi booking smartphone app that connects passengers to nearby taxi drivers, can now pay GrabTaxi fees via their M1 bills.
The local telco has tied up with GrabTaxi to save taxi drivers a trip to GrabTaxi's offices, it said on Wednesday.
GrabTaxi, the second-largest taxi network in Singapore, charges taxi drivers a small fee for bookings made through its app.
"Time is money, and we are pleased to work with GrabTaxi to allow Singapore's hardworking and tech-savvy taxi drivers to top up their GrabTaxi credits more conveniently," said M1's chief marketing officer P. Subramaniam.
