  hmmz i think it ight be more like the thigns they injected in got degraded by the body immune system over time.

  but in the movie, phoenix is her hidden power leh..as in she had it all along..so its part of her mutation..

  morlocks are a bunch of mutants whose leader is Storm who bested Callisto in hand-to-hand combat... twice..
  
  hilarity because i remember Callisto kidnapped someone to become her spouse (can't remember who) and Storm saved him by besting her...
  
  and another time, she kidnapped some woman to be some morlock's wife and Storm did the same thing (Callisto doesn't learn does she? )
  
  anyway, in the absence of Storm, Callisto leads the Morlocks..

  they're a bunch of mutants who lives underground..society won't accept them, cuz most of them don't look like normal humans, and thus cannot blend it if i'm not wrong..

  a quick search reveal this:
  
  Later Callisto abducted Angel to be her consort but was defeated in single combat by Storm of the X-Men, who became the official leader of the Morlocks. Callisto continued to act as their leader in Storm's absence. Callisto later attempted to take revenge on the X-Men by trying to force Kitty Pryde to wed Caliban. She again battled Storm and lost.
