KKBC will be celebrating the anniversaries of Marpa Chökyi Lodrö (1012–1097) and Milarepa (1040– 1123). Marpa and Milarepa are the foremost forefathers of the Kagyud tradition. Marpa the Translator transmitted many Buddhist teachings from India to Tibet. He travelled to India and Nepal seeking teachings from great masters such as Naropa. Upon his return to Tibet, Marpa spent many years translating and transmitting the Buddhist scriptures.
Jetsun Milarepa, one of Tibet’s most famous yogi, was a student of Marpa. His tutelage under Marpa was an extremely tough but necessary ordeal since Milarepa executed many dark deeds prior to his repentance. The essence of Milarepa’s teachings lies in a collection known as the Vajra Songs of Milarepa. Both Marpa and Milarepa’s blessings and realizations are the basis of our Kagyud lineage. Their lives, works and teachings have benefitted innumerable beings.
