Chronology of Dae Jang Geum
The chronological time line of the Jewel in the Palace drama:
1479
King Seong-jongÂ’s queen was ousted from the palace.
The reason is that she dared to scratch on the kingÂ’s cheek because of her jealousy.
1482
The ousted queen was executed by poison, coughing up blood.
She left her mother a piece of fabric permeated by her blood, saying “show this blood when my son becomes a king”
(* The execution was fictionally carried out by Jang-geumÂ’s father in episode 1.)
1494
Her crown prince “Yeon-san” became the 10th ruler of Chosun dynasty.
King Yeon-san was not so bad at the beginning. He was just a lonely king dreaming about a kingdom of an absolute monarch.
1497
Jang-geum was born.
1504
King Yeon-san finally knew the truth of his motherÂ’s death.
He almost got mad and killed all the people related to his motherÂ’s death remorselessly without weighing their sin.
(* Jang GeumÂ’s father was arrested and mother was killed, leaving Jang Geum alone, in episode 2.)
1506
Coup dÂ’etat. King Yeon-san was ousted 12 years after his coronation.
King Jung-Jong (1488~1544), the 11th ruler of Chosun dynasty, mounted the throne at the age of 18. He was Yeon-sanÂ’s younger brother by a different mother.
(* Little Jang Geum took part in the coup without intention, which made her go to the palace as a royal kitchen maid in episode 3. )
However, King Jung-jongÂ’s first wife was also forced to be ousted by cabinet ministers who led to the coup, because her family members were related to the deposed king.
(* King Jung-jong was deeply grieved over losing his beloved wife, but he had no actual power to protect her. He knew that he was just a kind of puppet king appointed by ministers. )
1515
King Jung-jongÂ’s second queen died soon after giving birth to a son. Later, the son became crown prince.
“Jo Gwang-jo (1482~1519)”, a famous social reformist, passed the state exam to be a government officer.
1517
King Jung-jong married his third wife, Queen “Mun-jeong” (1501~1565).
(* It is the young queen who is appearing on “The Great Jang-geum” drama.)
1518
“Jo Gwang-jo” eventually came into power of the government with supports of the king.
Jung-jong took advantage of him in order to weaken the political power of ministers as well as to strengthen his position as an absolute monarch.
1519
Ministers entrapped Jo Gwang-jo by using leaves saying “Jo will be a new king”. Rumors spread.
Jo Gwang Jo was finally expelled and executed with an allegation of high treason.
(* Jang Geum and Lady Han was also expelled in connection with this case, although they didnÂ’t have any connection in actual.)
1520
The (dead) second queenÂ’s son was chosen as crown prince.
(* He would be “In-jong (1515~1545)”, the 12th king of Chosun dynasty)
1534
Queen Mun-jeong (the third queen) gave birth to Prince “Kyeong-won”.
(* He would be “Myeong-jong (1534~1567)”, the 13th king. )
Conflicts over the throne between the two legitimate heirs of the kingdom kicked off.
(* Sir Oh and Choi family are on the side of the crown prince, while the Queen tries to make her son the crown prince.)
1544
King Jung-jong died of intestinal obstruction.
The crown prince mounted the throne and became King “In-jong”.
1545
King In-jong died just one year after his coronation.
His younger brother “Myeong-jong”, the son of Queen Mun-jeong, became a king at the age of 12.
The Queen Regent Mun-jeongÂ’s reign began.
NB:
The year of episode 37 or 38 could be 1536 or 1537.
The flow of story line is approximately the same as the time line of the history. But age of characters does not fit in. YouÂ’d better ignore the inconsistency of their age with their appearance. -

Does the drama reflect the actual culture and attitude of the Chosun people at that time?
If yes, i am quite impressed.
The period happened to coincide with the Ming Dynasty in China, and its well known that this is the period, where China is at its most advanced stage in terms of technology, and in the world, however, i like the way the Chosun people use those technology or knowledge.
For example, tonight episode shows how they open up medical centres, emplying women the way we employ nurses, run the medical centres the way we do with hospitals now
There are other things, like slaves who arent being treated barbarically, but were usefully employed and given much freedom to move ard. Not forgetting, that time our Chinese ancestors were totally subservient and kowtowing to the Emperor, the Chosun people arent so formal with their king. -
Today I watched the DVD. In the episodes that I am catching now, Changjin is already a female doc in the royal palace. It sounds great. But to my surprise (and also to every audience too), female doctors are of lower rank and status than the palace girl (gong nû).
Something spotted in one scene... Changjin was walking with her fellow female doctor. When the other girl walked away after bidding farewell, I noticed that she was wearing high heels.....hahhhaha
I wonder whether I will ever get to spot one of the actors wearing a watch or not. -

BEIJING, Sept. 2 -- Hunan TV introduced the South Korean dramatic series "Dae Jang Geum" last night, the very first time this royal period drama was broadcast in mainland China.
This hit show received an amazing viewer ratings share of 54% in South Korea, the highest in Korean television history. It continued its success with an average rating of 50% when aired in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Based on a true story, "Dae Jang Geum" tells the tale of Jang-Geum, the first female to become a personal physician for a king in ancient South Korea. Jang-Geum faces tremendous odds while working her way to the top of the royal court during 16th century Korea. Using her extraordinary determination and wisdom, she manages to achieve the impossible in a time when woman had little influence in Korean society.
A spokesman of Hunan TV said that most of the lead actors, including famous actress Lee Young Ae, will be invited to Changsha, capital city of South China's Hunan province.
This TV epic will be broadcast on Hunan TV throughout the month of September.

That explains why the Korea King have to give tributes to Ming. And also that the Korea King always wear Red with Gold linings, but Never all Gold or all Yellow clothings, because that is also dictates by the Ming Emperor, as all regional kings can only have red with gold linings.
During this time, Japan invasions on Korea is very very frequent. Infact, it is also the times when Japan is at its Strongest!...CHECK out the history of TAI HE LI ZHI CHUAN...that is the times of Feng Chen Xiu Ji....one 2nd person who contributed to the unification of Japan. Then japan wished to open up their land and their idea is to start with Korea then to China. But they were never successful and by 1580+, the empire collapsed and invasions to korea are ceased. Pirates from Japan is extremely common along the shores between korea and china. -

Palace Girls are highly regarded in the Korean Palace. In fact, they are higher rank than some officers. The Palace Girls are somewhat considered as the King's women. That's why they have to preserved their chastity for the King.
Chang Jin's title as a Palace Girl has been removed and became a slave.
The only way to return to Palace is to have some medical knowledge.
The way they viewed the doctors were very different from us today.
Male doctors are considered Professionals. But female doctors are not even if they have better skills than the male doctors. It is because they are females.
Female doctors in the Palace have much lower status than the Palace Girls.
So, for Chang Jin to move from a Palace Girl's status to a doctor, it was considered a downgrade for her.
Her identity as a Government slave can be removed by the government based on good performance. -

gotta admit, i'm a follower of the series Da Chang Jin. it has become so addictive that i watched 8 episodes (on the DVD) at one shot on a weekend. think i will suffer from withdrawal symptoms once i have completed the series....
