How does anyone feel about age discrimination in finding jobs? Recently I had a friend who is in his late 30s already finds that out of 10 job application he sent, only about 1 or 2 replied him.
Also, previously I had a HR manager who advises not to hire for those above 35. And what's worse, I saw an elderly man who lost his job a few years ago, had to set up his own business because he simply could not find a job.
No doubt people say about adaptability and such with age but we have to know in the US, age discrimination is taken seriously. The US law is against age discrimination.
In Singapore, we do not have a law against that. Only got a tripartite to try fight for our rights.
Hmm... I think fresh grads also having trouble finding a job...
in fact i feel our govt regulations is not really clear about many things.
even for work related issues like AL etc., they have in the website and states it is only a "guideline"
i understand it is difficult to find jobs for fresh grads. but at least the government makes statistical studies on fresh grad employment.
although they provide incentives and encouragement to companies to hire both the young and the old but i do not find improvement in the employment of the older group of workers
Is it that bad for 35+ people to find jobs in SG?
When I was back in SG in Feb, keep hearing people say can get jobs now because it is difficult to hire foreigners with the new rules, etc.
yes. it is still difficult.
might be even more difficult.
i have friends above 35 looking for jobs and out of 10 job applications, only maybe 1 reply. this is different for below 35.
there are all sorts of discriminations. it happens everywhere.
the only difference is how good people are at pretending there are no discriminations.
a friend works in job agency said that her agency and other agencies put aside resume from people with age 40 and above.
govt not interested to be strict to impose penalty there is nothing the singaporeans can do .

The employer prefers FT over locals, young pretty girls over old adults. There are plenty of over qualified senior workers. Huge demand of less educated, young cheap workers.
You are very right. it is so ironic for the govt to encourage people to upgrade to get promotion, salary increment, switch line. All bullcrap la.
Tell your friend not to put in his age lor.
Problem solved!

even if the govt impose rules what good can you get out of it? the prospective employer can still not offer you the job. what can you do? you end up wasting precious time and transport going for the interview.
Change mindset.........
Educated the future generation
Older unemployed people means more reliance on younger generation to take care of them.........Given Singapore low fertility rate, there is alot more "old" people as compared to young people.
And if older unemployed people are economically unproductive then what happens..........
As already mentioned before companies must be socially responsible to the nation as well.
And so must citizens.....play their freaking part in making Singapore better...rather then whole day just complain and complain...all bark no bite....show some action?
How many employees dare to whistle blow on their employers? Most don't want trouble so just go along...
Singaporeans most work together..........not against each other seriously...
