If you truly wish to grasp the different uses of the financial instruments, you can try understanding the derivation of stuff such as the Black-Scholes model, and other term structure models.
When you have seen the maths behind it, and understood all that is behind these models, the math in the application section naturally becomes easy.
And no.
I'm not joking here.
Because you probably will think so when you see the pages of math that goes into the derivation.

Maths is weak => Does not understand the upstream portion of the math => Needing to go beyond mere application of the various business models and delve into the actual fundamentals, which tend to be neglected by biz finance.
The upstream portion is the domain of Quantitative Finance majors, Applied Maths, and Financial Economics.

When I do not understand the point of studying the upstream portion, as I did, I inferred as I could from the downstream applications.
