I am the writer of the article http://help-your-money.blogspot.com/2011/12/retrenchment-hits-me.htmlI am quite surprised that someone would pick up on my retrenchment post and post it on this forum.
While retrenchment is a depressing thing, it need not end badly. It gives a person plenty of time to step back and think and who knows what useful thing will come out of it? I work in an industry with poor prospects. When a person works diligently but still ends up with a failure outcome and he is surrounded by people suffering the same fate, he is probably in the wrong place. When you know you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, getting kicked out of it cannot be too bad a thing :)
This is not the first time I am retrenched. Speaking from experience, my advice to those who have never been retrenched is to keep an emergency cash reserve to prepare for this event, particularly those working in the tech sector where things change at a very fast pace. With a strong cash reserve, at least one can continue to meet family obligations during the down period.
Thanks so much for sharing your life experiences. Not sure if you have heard of this website before: www.transitioning.org . It's a website by Gilbert Goh, who himself was retrenched before and is now helping fellow Sgporeans who have met the same fate, cope. Cheers.
Very scary.
Looks like many people will be retrenched at least once in their whole working life because economic cycles are getting shorter and shorter.
We have had 3 serious downturns since 1998.
1 more coming up next year.
I think the economy does not change much but its the companies that decide to downsize staff ....its not that they are losing $....but they still retrench staff to upsize profits...
I was also retrenched 2 months ago. The day after I joined, my co lost a big customer. The stupid co decided to retrench the new comers and keep the foreigners, who have become PRs.
I have been for few interviews thereafter. No sucess. Nowadays co prefers hiring foreigners, complaining about fussy Singaporeans. I travel 1..5 hrs, 2x, in the midst of heavy downpour to the companies for interviews but being treated like a beggar, interviewed by foreign workers who cannot speak proper English. Some interviewers even pass remarks at my age.
Yes, electronics and supporting industries are moving out
Would you care to disclose your age and last industry you were in?

i bet it would be different if u came with an armani suit and gucci necktie......and a gold ring with a ruby.
.....even recruiters are hiring foreigners to conduct interviews...is within prediction....and the quality of these foreign recruiters are usually not on par as they were similarly recruited due to their cheap labour ....and their keeness to get a job in singapore.....
and perhaps these foreign recruiters would even give priorities to their own fellow foreign frens who are just like them ...dying to get a job in singapore .....these may mean our locals are facing unprecedented threats....
MOM should conduct investigations on these companies and structure due diligence on the hiring process to ensure the quality of recruiters as well as checking that they do not biased locals for foreigners on the basis of cheaper labour....
these would also mean singapore labour market would be degraded in terms of quality and professionalism...

There u go again....I said 2 jobs the most ....otherwise dun need to sleep already....Hahaha!
The key of survival is to spend less and build more reserves.
As for asking the authority to stop company in employing foreigners, it is already the industry practise and they will not be willing to interfere with MARKET FORCE.
Hyom, thanks for sharing your experience as it may happened to most of us when the company hit the bottoms and it is not the fault of the employee.
The economic condition for the world have changed as there are too many people living on the countries and no one paying for the tax,

You are pegged by a belief that all jobs must be at least 8 hours.
There is such thing as temp or part time jobs that require less hours you know.

Savings is definitely very very important in life...tat's for sure...><"
Good article ... very long though, I thought I am reading a blog.
Why not take this as an opportunity to start your own business ? Maybe retrenchment is not so bad afterall !
