I am an expat working in Singapore and had been for the last 5 years. Over this span of time, I had witnessed an increasing number of migrants in Singapore in occupations of white and blue collars from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, India, Russia, Japan, etc.
Probably the most rampant change was in the F&B and IT industries, as we see a replacement with migrants from China and Philippines.
While immigrations is a testament to the growth experienced by the economy and supports the long term growth of the economy, it is at the same time, a cause for stiff competition in Singapore in job security. For example, if one of my juniors left, they could be replaced by a Malaysian, Indonesian, Russian or Middle Eastern.
What are your thoughts on the matter?
And where all the Singaporeans going? Are they moving up the ladder to higher paying occupations or moving out of the country?
