i'm graduating soon with a SIM-RMIT Bachelor in Business Marketing...with zero work experience.Well,i know that i'm losing out already to the local Uni grads from NUS,NTU,SMU.
Guys, how much should i ask for starting salary?..was thinking 2.5k..but havebeen hearing and reading opinions here and there and it seems that i've to ask for lower starting salary..man.But i'm a guy who have completed by 2 years of combat NS...i should able to qualify for that bit more of pay right..
Usually the different rounds of interviews that one goes thru for a position..what's the difference..i know..the panel of interviewers may get more and more big shot..How about the type of questions etc...or anything else that i may not know..
Hope u'll can shed some light here...on the current job market.
wat kinda co.?
wat position?
how does ur combat NS relate to ur pay?
entry level for marketing, branding, product, biz development executive.
MNC/SME doesn't matter..cos i'm looking at 6 months ahead..have yet to graduate.Need some info about the job market.
no internship?
poly time yes. With a freaking small IT firm, doing menial jobs...nothing much gained
marketing is a very general business subject but is essential in practice than being an armchair strategist or academician...good...at least the degree is SIM related...still looks a good decent piece of paper...so what if you've got a marketing degree from NUS...
do not be disheartened my fren...
try banking...u will be very well rewarded if u make it....marketing is grounded in solid networks of people boosting businesses...5 or 7Ps are just principles....
anyway, for interviews...u need to have a good big picture of the industry u r trying into....u may not have the good many experiences as a freshie...so u cannot demand high starting pay....even if u have to start with low basic/ high comm...
start by joining associations and proactively participating their events, learning and talking to friends...soon u will be as conversant as them and put to good use during interviews...
if u really want good solid experience....u must start right at the bottom to build track records and over the years....this is the only way to climb the corporate ladder for successful marketing professionals...
see you at the top!
Good luck bro!

thanks for the advice
as ur major is rather general and there are so many scopes, u might want to choose a more niche vertical if u want an edge over the many many other biz grads out there
quite lucky if u can get 2k as starting pay

If I can recall correctly, 10 years ago, average starting pay for general degree holders was around 2k.
I would like to predict that 10 years later, the average starting pay should be around 2k too.
Maybe even lower as we move towards a cheaper better faster workforce.
Civil service will only recognise your diploma....so it's diploma pay if that's the direction. Private sector...if you're lucky, $2000 would be nice. Anything above that would be a bonus. Then again, it's not what you know or what qualifications you have. It's who you know....and if you do, then such things are easily negotiated.

It all depends on luck. But I advise you to be more proactive in finding work.
2.5k is quite hard. Maybe you can try 2.1k to 2.3k, or even less.
Questions that they may ask
1) What do you like about marketing?
2) Why do you think we should hire you?
But combat NS doesnt count anything in the private sector. Even in public sector, its whether you completed / exempted / not completed. (You've just wasted 2 years serving without realising that you are actually disadvantaged due to NS - Not forgetting employers frown at you when you are from the combat side, due to reservist liabilities.)
Yeh, the extra money for having served NS is non-existent in the private sector. There's no law to mandate it and it's only practised in the public sector. May even have to settle for $1700-$1800 if times are bad.
just start from bell boy. Start from scatch. I start from delivery man.
You should also ask yourself, how long will you be employed and then jobless forever?
Remember, regardless of whether you are degree or not, once your age is there, no one wants to employ you, especially if you are "over paid" singaporean.
Always ask yourself " will someone cheaper take over my job?"
ask for 2k first or even lesser(if u found a company that u can let u learn alot of things)
than after working 2-3 yrs and gaining experience u can request for 10-20% more pay rise than ur previous pay.
first 2-3 yrs of ur working life u should learn as much as possible. pay should not be a priority but working experience gained should be. ur resume would be better and u can command a higher pay in ur next job.
and after working for 2-3 yrs job hop if possible. if u stay at the same company for 6-7 yrs, ur annual increment mayb 5-10% but if u job hop, u can request for up to 20% more pay (this can only be possible if u have a good resume)
i had a fren, shes nw 33 and only had o lv certs
her starting pay is less than 1.5k and her pay nw is 3.1k. she does what i listed out and she can be considered a success.

5-10% annual increment?
Which company?
Originally posted by ditzy:Even 3% is quite unheard of. maybe its just me.
Hanor.
Past few years, mostly stagnant or up to 3% like what you mention.
Good performers or only in certain top performing industries maybe 5-10% but these are in the very small minority group.
LoL. Thread starter is obviously very dumb and ignorant. What has serving 2 years of NS in a combat vocation got to do with finding a marketing job? Are you looking to work as a Cisco security guard? If cisco guard, then yes you need that 2 years of NS.
I think you should lower your salary expectations first, because afterall you have ZERO work experience. It is this reason why employers are inclined to hire foreigners over singaporeans because locals alway ask for higher pay and yet have no job experience.
Start low first. ask for something around 1.8k to 2k. Foreigners with honors degree are willing to work below market rate and also willing to slog longer hours in the office. They are prepared to lose their weekends if they have to. Are you prepared to compete against them?

Times are bad.
We have to be cheaper, better and faster.

If this company is hiring, I can tell you many people will be writing in for a job.

You might give people the false impression, and when their company fails to give them that 5-10% annual increment, they go "oh this sucks!". Don't be surprised, annual increments can be as low as 0.3% these days.

I have heard of 2 digit monthly increments before.
They call it token sum for all the hard work you have done for the company.

2 digit? In 0.3, 0 is one digit, 3 is another digit.
