"Boss, can you pay me more than what this other company is offering me? Like a $1,500 increment?"
Ask nicely.

The thread title says 900 bucks a month, the content says otherwise.

Won't it be embarassing to tell his ex boss, "Sorry I heard wrongly, can I have my old job back?"

told the news to my section manager and he received it quite well. He was disappointed but at least he didnt scold me. He tried to work out with HR for a counter offer but they could not match it, so they accepted my resignation letter.
GM is overseas so i dont know how he will react to the news when he returns...anw its only 2 weeks of enduring the awkwardness so i will grin and bear it. Hopefully everyone is in the CNY mood.
thanks for your opinions guys...
Nothing wrong with jumping.
It's all fair and square in the business world. Most companies aren't loyal to employees too. Recession comes, first thing they dump you.
I referred to $900/month as the difference between my current salary and new offer.....
Anyway, i got my current job through an employment agency and the catch is that if i resign within 3 months, I pay them 1 month of my salary. To be precise, my salary is 2550 with a $50 meal allowance every month. $2.50 is deducted per day that I am absent from work for any reason eg. AL, NPL, MC, etc.
So the contract with the job agency states:
“ I agree to pay *** PTE LTD a service fee equivalent to one (01) Month of my offered salary or the invoiced amount to the employer, whichever is higher. Signing the letter of appointment or commencing work with the employer deems acceptance of the job offer.”
Now im trying to fight to pay only 2550 instead of 2600 (its a matter of principle; we cant let them think jobseekers are easily bullied) but the manager insists on me paying that extra $50.
What are your thoughts on how i can argue? Isnt an allowance not a salary?
jump la jump la

I dont know wat my boss worked out with HR to try to retain me, but in the end they accepted my resignation letter.
No company will invest 1500 a month to keep a noob

According to the Employment Act found at http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/non_version/cgi-bin/cgi_retrieve.pl?actno=REVED-91 ,
"salary" means all remuneration including allowances payable to an employee in respect of work done under his contract of service, but does not include —
(a) the value of any house accommodation, supply of electricity, water, medical attendance, or other amenity, or of any service excluded by general or special order of the Minister published in the Gazette;
(b) any contribution paid by the employer on his own account to any pension fund or provident fund;
(c) any travelling allowance or the value of any travelling concession;
(d) any sum paid to the employee to reimburse him for special expenses incurred by him in the course of his employment;
(e) any gratuity payable on discharge or retirement; and

I dunno any company thats willing to put 900 more to poach one either. There is always a catch somewhere, and by the time you find it, ouch.
Life always kicks you in the balls somewhere, sometime, somehow.

The starting pay for fresh grads betw the govt sector and the private sector could be as high as $800/mth.
if the salary offer is for real i dont see why you have to ask.
it takes many years for a 900 jump in salary.
what are you waiting for?
Go for it! Its your chance !
