Especially for those currently working. Sometimes due to work politics it's not easy to provide a reference.
wat reference?
Reference as in a person to call up. Someone who would talk about u as a person or how well you did ur job.
I got state 2 references in my resume but dunno if the interviewer got call them up or not..
Oh that reference. I got all my jobs without references. I put a name or two at the end of my resume, but nobody gives a shit.
oh, i call tt referees.
Wahlau leh, what 2 names u put? I think some employers really check. Sometime I myself wonder what is the use of reference. I mean we would definately put someone who will say nice things about us.So with that, what's the point?

and a best of friend of 10 yrs working in an established co

I think u meant referees.
Whether ur new employer will check out the referees depends on the nature of work u wil be tasked to do and the new employer HR policy.
Say this person age 33, worked 6 years in never heard of XYZ company as a Head Logistics, and he applied to say SIA for the post of Head Logistics, the referees will be very important. The new employer will want to confirm the person's previous roles and responsibilities.
Most dun bother at entry level or even mid management jobs. However I do know of several companies that even do a phone interview with the referees.

they didn't ask
So far, i gone for 4 jobs and none have ever asked for permission. Must be the small world syndrome.
Good to have referees.
Net working.
Especially COO, CFO, etc where CEO will pull their pple over.
references would most probably be checked for positions such as senior management and above..definitely for designations like director etc.
i have encountered HR calling prev HR to verify the term of employment and salary amt.
cos apparently some ppl made some "mistakes" while writing the CV.
