Hi guys n gals,
Am in Sunny Singapore for the time being trying to find some sort of employment. Hopefully something that lasts for a year or 2.
Been trying to find work in England and the economy sucks so much that in a class of 56 grads, only 20 have been employed!
Looking through the classified's I found 3 jobs that welcome 'foreigns to apply'.
2 cafe's and Pizza Hut. While Pizza Hut may not seem too ambitious, I need something for the time being. It says 'please state expected salary'. Any ideas? Don't want to want to shoot myself in the foot by seeming greedy or just naive.
For reference, I'm 21, Male, British Citizenship, graduated from the University of Sheffield reading Business & Information Mgt. Speaks English and Cantonese.
Any opinions or suggestions are welcome.
Thanks.
hmmm you are British ? sorry to say this but your english sucks. spotted several grammatical errors. your standard is not much better than singaporeans living in a singlish speaking environment.
Thanks for the input man.
Care to add anything post related?
The grammatical 'suckiness' is a matter of choice. It's an internet forum ffs not a 10,000 word thesis. Got other things to do, such as job-hunt, watch House and play Dragon Age.
In other news, English people generally suck at English. They don't care to admit it, but travelling to Amsterdam usually reveals a much higher standard of English.
goes to show singapore aint the only 'corrupt' foriegn talent country doesnt it?
There are many other jobs for foreigners.
Macdonalds, KFC, toilet cleaner, dishwasher, waiter, sales assistant etc

You're a Uni grad and you wanna apply for work in Pizza Hut?
Maybe you can consider teaching tuition or something? The pay is definitely better.

Good to see the suggestions widening.
Any higher paid options?
Thanks

Hi,
I guess 'want' is relative to the situation, and the current situation is a low amount of Sing-$'s.
Pizza Hut was only a sample of what I gleaned from the Classifieds section. It's also one of the few jobs I saw that said 'Foreigns Welcome to Apply'. Other higher paid suggestions would be welcome.
I thought of tuition, but honestly Singapore's level of maths is higher, so it rules that out and English is the only other subject that springs to mind. However I get the impression that the standard of English is already quite high in Singapore, thus lessening the chances of this being successful. I guess I could also do Classical Civilisation tutoring but that would also require a refreshing on my side.
Thanks for the reply.
The wage of a Pizza Hut worker in Singapore is about $4.50, equivalent to only 2 pounds and a few pennies more.
Singapore welcomes foreign talent, they set aside jobs like cleaners, bus drivers, disc washers etc..
I don't recommend it because the pay isn't that high.
If you need big money and fast, you can:
if you are a girl, go to geyland and wait
If you are a guy, buy a wig, go to changi and wait
These are the only jobs left in Singapore for foreign talents.
No joke
I'm serious
Not kidding

You can try teaching English.
Our English standards are not that great.
F OFF WE ARE FULL, YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE, YOU FARKING TWAT.
Thanks for the kind words and straight talking.
I'm sure we'll treat you with a similar attitude if you ever decide to spread your wings in the future and look elsewhere.
Whats the employment situation in Singapore then?

Just a question. Why didnt go hk since u can speak cantonese?
The Singapore PAP government welcomes you to steal jobs away from our citizens.
I did for a bit, but as I can't read and write it, that was a bit of a hindrance compared to applicants who could.
In all I needed some experience before they would seriously consider my application.
I guess I had a secondary motive of getting to know my father, and his side (Singaporean) of the family.
Quite honestly I'll apply for any of the jobs around, it's an 'open' opportunity and it's up to Singaporean applicants to offer competition. I don't expect an easy-ride or to freeload or even to get a reply.
In fact, why the hell did the PAP make it so easy then?
How many quids could you claim off the unemployment benefits?

In England, its £51.85 or $106.9SGD a week. Peanuts man. Can't live off that.
Any other suggestions?
A Big Mac cost GBP2.30, you could afford 22.5 Big Macs with that.
A plane ticket from London to Singapore cost GBP685 (SGD1411).
You only get paid SGD3.50/hour (GBP1.70) and above for work in a fast food industry.
To rent a room in Singapore, you need to fork out at least SGD600 a month.
Cheap local hawker food depending on the area you eat in will set you back SGD3.50 to SGD5.00 a meal. Medical is not free like the UK, you have to pay every dime and nickel by yourself, so if you happen to fall sick here, it's just your luck.
Not sure after working 1 year you will be able to buy a plane ticket back to England.

Are you applying job in spore?
Or in your own country?
Hi Ackbar,
I heard the job unemployment there isn't very good due to said foreigners.
Why don't you try applying for a Singapore PR and working over here.
The pay for the educated can be very good and the tax is low. The people here also welcome foreigners with open arms. Economy here is also doing well with expansion plans by the government to accomodate more foreign talents such as yourself. We lack talent unfortunately.
In the top tier 6-7 figures annual salary is the norm and with the low tax and cheap cost of living this is the place.
Kind Regards
Genie
If ts dont have any experiences or dont have any min requiremens, then will be difficult to apply for spore pr.
I'm sure he will do better than the Chinese PRC and Indian Nationals. He is young and is equipped with a degree from England. Many Singaporeans would drool at the chance to study overseas.
As such they are a vital labour source that Singapore lacks.
The government has been improving wages to attract these foreign talent.
Live life to the fullest....welcome to Singapore.
Kind Regards
Genie
Just send out your resume even if the company does not state that they welcome foreigners.
It's a pretty sensitive topic these days and I believe many companies employ foreigners but choose not to state it on their ads.
If you are interested, you might even want to consider working in the Hospitality industry. They employ a lot of foreigners.

the idea that british/americans/australians speak(type) better english is a myth (colonization mentality?)
