would you take up a job (fresh graduate) for 1200 monthly?
1,200 degree grad???? WTF? Hell no.
I think higher..$1.2k is way to low.
Probably around $2k?
But depends on what you major in.
1200? What is this, 1985?
Heard that some PRC graduates walk in and promise their employers that they will work the 1st month trial for free though - just need food and accomodation.
Probably the reason why I offer 1.9k to 2.1k not many employer ask me go interview.
which industry?
wat position?
Well, lets put in this way.
Spore now have many cheap foreign workers whos willing to work at $1.2k per month.
So, if they are willing to work at this low salary, will employers employ them or you (if you are asking for $2.2k per month)?
Spore are facing this problem right now...a virus that was caused by the influx of cheap labour.
In the past my uncle time 15 years ago U grad $3500...
My time $2000 bunn bo lang ai (oso nobody want)!
my sentiments exactly. i tried telling my friend thats too low. his take on this is that. he will do so, earn some allowance at least while hunting for a better job ..
not sure what he studied.. should be economics or business..
and the job is not in sales.. its a fixed pay.. contract
my take is that.. once he take up a job for 1.2k.. any future employers will try to give him a lower pay than what they can offer for the job..
is that a reasonable thought?
If it is a contract, then cannot compare with month salary scale.
Should check how much per hour you friend being offer.
But, as you know, it's employers world. Press too low and take it or leave it. Also, foreigners waiting to grab the jobs too.
Maybe your friend can work for the time being (better to be employed) and at the same time, look for another jobs (higher salary).
Your friend should not sign the contract.
If he's going for a part-time job for $1,200 - those that can resign anytime when he gets a job, its ok. (Understand he might have problems without working and without income.)
No way should he go into a 1 or 2 year contract job which pays him only $1.2k.
He's making himself even harder to find a full-time job that pays well.
New employer ask...
"So when can you start work?"
"1 years time..."
"Ok... thank you for your time

hm. but it seems to me that does not demonstrate negotiating skills.. doesnt reflect very well on the candidate it seems.. @ junyang : did they get hired in the end???????
lol.. i see likeyou and junyangs point..
he's earning 8 per hour.. 8 hr work week..
i still think its low.. given that he can take up tuition and earn much more per hourly rate.. and continue to look for a decent pay job..
then again.. theres the other side of the argument.. gaining experience!
I need to check.
$8 pr hour is normal pay (office work) regardless of whether you are a degree or not.
A company survival will not care much on the staff they employed. They only want to see black.
About negotiating skills, seem like not workable at present. Employers just want cheap and experience and can work longer hours workers.
I am sorry if I really pour cold water on you.
I'm a fresh grad and earn $2000 for my first job, and I'm happy for that ;)

Good to hear that.
If employer willing to offer $2k for a fresh grad, take it immediately.
Degree better or diploma better, I mean commence a better salary?
@likeyou
i see your viewpoint.. cold water is okay for hot weather like this.. so i guess it all depends on what a person wants and who he is....
@kuch2 ranee
good for you.. 2000 is a reasonable sum.. care to share what are you doing?
Thanx all. I'm also quite grateful. I'm PR from Indonesia, having degree of Political Science from local Indonesian Univ. In singapore, I'm interested to join Insurance initially, so I took all the required courses and modules, sponsored by the company. Apparently, I found the sales job doesnt suit my nature. So i tried to look for another opportunity. Eversince, there are many insurance company eager to hire me, considering all insurance qualification that I have. Now I'm working as staff at one of the insurance company, has nothing to do with sales, and they pay me $2000
@likeyou and all who's checking out this topic
well, my friend is getting 3500 for a job with a diploma.. no kidding.. shes in this industry for about 5 years.. accounting..
i think its a combination of skills, experience, qualifications, attitude and luck?
what do you all think?
Yes, agree, Grolsch! :)
good to hear that Kuch2 ranee!
what do the rest of you think? would like to hear more opinions!! :)))) thanks!
WTF 1.2k for degree holder!!!!!
My friend business degree fresh grad, no work experience, got a sales-oriented job in a small firm, 2K basic, still got 20% commission for every item he sell.
But then again, if it's a job with good prospect, low pay is ok, start low aim high, provided got space for you to fly high lor.

I dunno if they got hired in the end.
Seems like we already have an "unofficial minimum wage" for U-grads here in Singapore and that is $2000.

Position? Industry? Base pay only? Allowances? Is that the net or gross? You state $1200 monthly is pretty vague. Coz, it can be job based, and $1200 could just be a base, but for example some jobs give hazardous, or offshore pay, and that can amount to $300 a weekday, and even more on weekend, and thats not even with OT thrown in.
