Why not make Mandarin a Compulsary Language in all schools? Even for pre-schools... I am writing on this topic cause i am damn pist off with the way Employment in Singapore is... For those who are unemployed they'll understand why. Ever flip through the Classified paper searching for jobs... "Prefer mandarin speaking", " able to communicate in Mandarin", "Able to liase with china workers", "Bilingual in Mandarin" and etc....I am one of those who is affected by this usual lines. Very limited jobs available for the Non-chinese. I thought Singapore is suppose to be Multi-Racial country whereby in a company they should have all our main 3 races working together and united. But if employers are seeking such a requirement aren't they actually reducing the chances of non-chinese? Don't tell me that all these companies with such requirement doesn't even have atleast 1 Mandarin speaking employee in every department? Then why reduce non-chinese chances in employment? Or is it that these companies just want their employees all to be of the same race?

Language is only one of the many discriminatory practices our dear government has turned a blind eye to.
There's also age, health conditions and now.. preference for non-citizens (national origins).
Time for a new leadership.
even if you know how to speak mandarin, if you are not chinese, you will not be hired.

if you want the job that much, go learn the language... you don't see me kpkb-ing when i know i will not get certain jobs advertised because i do not speak japanese, thai, bengali, bahasa or arabic or whatever...
the company does not owe you a living...

Making it a compulsary language would be direct racist act by the gahmen.
If there is one language that should be compulsary, that should be malay. I'm not pro malay or anything but look at the fact that we're comfortably sitting on malay soil.
Although we're a so called multi-racial country with an ever changing culture, we shouldn't be ignorant of the past. Its said that sooner or later as more people come to Singapore, we would be losing our identity. Is Singapore fated to be doomed?
Malays were not the first inhabitants.
In fact the term "Malay" was not used to describe the "indigeneous" people here.
There is seriously no problem of the Mandarin language being lost in Singapore given the size of PRC residents living and working here.
Pretty soon, everybody will have to speak Mandarin to communicate.
Really.

Haiz.
40 over years of nation building efforts all gone down the drain with the implementation of lax open door policies of the past few years.
What happened to bilingualism?
We are moving backwards.

Today, Malay is more of a general term.
Call them Orang Laut, they're still Malays.

Having malay as the national language doesnt mean we are on malay soil.
Please get the idea straight.
Learn the language outside. Take up some mandarin classes at CC or language centres all that. =)
Chinese language isn't hard actually, given Singapore standards. Can write a bit, speak a bit, OK liao.

Not all Malays are "Orang Laut".
The ex-Malaysian PM Mahathir had written in his book - The Malay Dilemma - that the Malays had migrated into Peninsular Malaya from Yunnan Province in China, and anthropologists have also documented this historical migration fact.
The original and true "Sons of the Soil" in Malaya - also known as 'Bumiputras' - are the "primitive jungle tribesmen" known as the 'negritos' - also referred nowadays as the "Orang Asli".
FYI - Yunnan was located at the fringe of the Chinese Empire and was 'absorbed' into China as a province only in 109 AD during the Han Dynasty.

I didn't say all Malays were Orang Laut.
Didn't i say i was talking about it generally? If you wanna talk about migrating descendants there are loads of theory.
Thanks for the enlightenment.
I say fuck to the government!
i would say u are looking at the wrongs ads......
They won't make Mandarin a compulsory subject to take. Like some people say, it's openly racist thing to do. But as you know how much PRCs are coming into our country, sooner or later, WE will be the ones who need to adapt to them, their culture & their language, not the other way round.
So indirectly, not compulsory, minorities will have no choice but to take up Mandarin courses.
