IT WILL be months before the first cards are dealt at Singapore's two casinos, but several employees have already been fired because of stringent rules that dictate who can work there.
Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has fired more than 30 casino employees, while Marina Bay Sands (MBS) has also told an unknown number of workers to go.
The Straits Times understands that the workers' applications to work at the gaming tables were rejected by the Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA).
No reasons were given, but it is likely that the affected workers had brushes with the law in the past.
There is one key difference between the actions taken by the two sides, however. The affected MBS' workers have not started work, although they were given employment contracts.
But RWS' employees had completed their three-month training stints: Some croupiers it hired were even sent overseas for training.
The workers were told on Thursday that they had to go, a day after RWS opened four of its six hotels.
Initially, RWS wanted them to repay $8,000 in training costs, but it later waived this requirement.
MBS, meanwhile, broke the news to its employees last month.
It sent e-mail messages to those affected, saying that their employment contracts were voided because they had failed CRA background checks.

Sick of the government. Say and do different thing one. Encourage u to employ more jail bird while they rejects all of them. Should show example.
i got mixed feelings abt this topic...
i mean i do support the idea of the yellow ribbon. letting those convicted of crimes to rejoin the society and treating them the same...
but then think again... would we wan someone who had committed robbery burgarly theft to be employed as our condo security? or our shopping centre security?
how abt some1 who convicted of molesting or rape be employed as swimming instructors for instance? u wan let ur children be taught by him?
u wan some1 who commited fraud or cheats or scams to work in ur financial or accounts department??
u all say give them chances but it has to be compensated by the risks u have to take...
as for casino.. it involves daily transaction of millions of dollars and one thing they wanna avoid is the 'ocean eleven'.. so i wun blame them for not wanting to hire ex criminals.
well of cos we hv to give them chances as well rite.. i suggest not very sensitive departments like production, marketing, adminstrative, sales, etc..
i dare say if tmr newspaper says that some XXX primary sch empoly an ex-criminal who was convicted of child molestion to teach in the sch as teacher,, i'm sure the topics wun be involving Yellow Ribbons, it will be more like MOE stupid, PAP Sucks, LKY go hell etc... haha

Yes, all propaganda.
Jail bird cannot work in govt operated business.
Can only work in pte ltd.
What sort of information are govt trying to tell us?
So its best not to make mistake in our youth to prevent all this kind of obsticles when looking for jobs.
Singapore Goverment probably have their own reasons for sacking people who has brushes with the law from working in the casino cuz probably they're gonna deal with huge amount of money and tourists and probably cant afford to let anything go wrong tho they have tons and tons of cameras all around.
Where did the Yellow Ribbon Campaign go?
Yellow ribbon campaign just went down the drain woh....
To Starhawk and Ian :
Not sure if it would be correct to think like you guys. The yellow ribbon campaign was undertaken simply to overcome that primitive mindset. Although I agree that the Government is just blatantly screwing themselves in the ass with this move, as an individual in a 21st century society we ought not act like barbarians.
Consider these ex-convicts, denied proper employment. A ex-robber, ex-thieves, ex-conmen and frauds, human they are, they need to eat too. Without a salary, what are the chances they will return to their old ways to survive?
Nearly 100% i tell you, and at that time, perhaps towards a society that refused to forgive them, they may have given up all hope of rehabilitation, and turns darker then before. Until then, will we, the society and country as a whole, be better off then denying these people who are trying to do good a chance at employment?
To Shisui:
U r not wrong.. To forgive and forget is a virtue..
but for me i think of consequences to every actions u have done..
if consequence is taken off... imagine some guys wanna do a crime..
he wun think abt the consequences instead he may think..
'hell with it.. i'll just do it.. 2 or 3 yrs i come out i still can find job easily'
'chey~~!! only will tio black record only ma.. can't do me harm'
'nvm i cheat this company.. if kena at most sit 2 yrs jail.. come out go another company cheat again haha'
well of cos u may say 'come on not all ppl r like this'
yup tats y i said chances given risk taken.. u hv to really know the ppl inside out in order to know if he has gone well or he will be re-offensive..
tats y i suggest insensitive departments for them to work in.. win-win situation. no risk taken and chances r given..
can't be a coupier? be the maintenancer in the theme park..
can't be the cage cashier? be a waiter in the posh restuarant..
lky also went to jail during his political days? lol.
Starhawk :
Can't say I disagree with you, because this thorny issue has indeed two very feasible sides to it. Such as the one I have described as well as the thing you have said.
Background checks are indeed necessary, as well as honest declarations from the staff, but I strongly feel they deserve a chance if they only have 1 occurence of any certain crime (robberies, frauds, thefts etc etc) and have served their respective sentences for it.
If we're talking about repeat offenders, yes, I too do not think they deserve another shot at decent proper employment.
Cheers,
