Results doesn't matter.
What matter most is your teaching skills and the understanding of the knowledge. Examples: Trigonometry.
Do you know the basics of trigo well? If yes, how would you apply it to the daily life? Are you comfortable in manipulating the formulas and explain it clearly and yet in simple terms to your student?
Starting out first is hard, indeed. You will get to learn when you are teaching the student. Every student that you will be getting is different and in the course of your teaching, you will actually realized that being "dynamic" is the key point in teaching career to cater each and every student needs.
Being able to identify the "types" of student i.e. (Kino, audo, visual) is vital for you to design the lessons well to suit his/her needs in learning.
As a private tutor, I myself still undergo learning everyday. Learning how to be a good teacher that motivates and inspires my student. As a teacher, we are also a student.

Chin Seng.

Hi Bern. ice,
There are no definite grades required for one to give home tuition. However, it is only natural that most parents will feel that their children are in good hands if they are taught by a tutor with excellent results.
The most important thing which you must understand, is that teaching and learning about a subject is quite different, thus even a student with outstanding results may not be a good teacher at all. The inverse is true as well.
Cheers.
