IT and banks in private sectors offer contracts I can understand that, but even the government is following suit. hospitals, schools, government agencies like LTA, etc, even our local universities like NUS, NTU and SMU are offering contracts for employment. I wonder if cleaners also need to sign contracts or not.
I know the rationale for offering contracts like in a recession, if companies need to retrench people, contracts personel are the ones asked to leave first. if you are in your 40s and 50s, and this happens, you are being farked man. how to find your next job at this age and you have a family to feed and mortgage to pay.
Dunno why the government need to follow the private sectors in adopting contracts. private sector pay 6 months bonus, does it mean government also need to pay 6 months bonus to civil servants?
Haiz. Look for MNC and SME lor. They offer perm positions

not really. MNC's also offer contract positions. as for SME, isnt your company MDIS also offer contract positions?
Most MNC and SME are offering perm position.
MDIS is a perm position just that you can't leave within 2 years or have to compensate..

got lar, but also got offer contract positions lar.
omg 2 years? they have to beg people to stay with them for 2 years, what does that tell you about the company already?
those companies that are good to work for, wont implement such sucky clauses in their employment contract. because they know, if your heart is not with the company, whats the point of retaining you if you decide to leave them. your position is also not management position. by the way, managers who are to quit, have to serve 3 months notice or pay 3 months pay at your company.

Managers also have to sign 2 years bond/contract with the company and can't leave within 2 years?
If I don't like the company I will leave before the end of 2 years. Salary is paid at the end of the month.
End of the month when I get my salary than I will just disappear and stop coming to work the next day onwards.
If they don't pay my cpf because I leave without giving notice, I will go MOM or CPF to complain because it is illegial in singapore not to pay CPF.
I don't believe they will go through the hassle of employing a lawyer to sue me. If they do so I will tell it to the newspaper and have it published and the whole of singapore know MDIS got such lousy policy which will tarish their reputation.
Some companies sign people "on contract" for about 1 or 2 years before they recruit you as a full-time employee. More like a probation period and for them to test out the employee.
Other companies just want to save costs. Manipulating it because it is legal.
basically if your contract has ended, they will renew one dun worry. the reason they wont renew your contract is due to your performances. also if you were to be retrenched by them, they dun have to pay you retrenchment pay and benefits.

well they have their own lawyers to deal with this matter, see if they want to pursue or not. if they do, you can seek help from MOM or you hire your own laywer. Alternatively you can seek help from your own MP. your MP can direct help to you or even write a letter to your company for mediation. mostly likely your MP will ask you to approach MOM for help lor.
Quite a bad idea to be in a company that just renew your contract every 2 years. By the time you reach 40. Its the end. They wont renew your contract and you are DEAD. That is my opinion. Contract till 28 probably is still okay. Above 28 its quite scary, given you are probably going to have a family on your own and you risk losing your job any time. =X

thats the point I am trying to make. even our government are adopting this contract from the western world. government agencies, our hospitals, and our local uni's offer contract positions to new hires.
so is this good or bad?
Even though most companies offer contracts these days, I believe they will offer a perm tenure after the 1st or 2nd contract otherwise the turnover rate will eventually be high.
this only apply to banking, where the contract staff is converted to perm positions. contract means after contract ended, offer the same terms and tenure and so on and so forth.
I know one director who joined the company recently, is on contract. his department new hires are all on contract sia lol.
more often that not, contracts are used in the banking and finance industry. although other industries also offer jobs on a contractual basis, banking and finance have more contractors than others.
i think that it's fine to be a contracted staff.. if you are really showing good performance and good team work, you'll have a higher chance of being converted to perm. it also allows the company to evaluate your performance, before deciding if they should extend your contract, converting to perm or letting you go after the contract runs out.
Not just banking leh......
Anyway, to address the topic.....dowan contracts ah? be your own boss lor....lol.

actually when you reach 40 and above...whether you are perm or not does not matter more...the company nowadays don't value the employees like they used to...Do you see company pay you for "Golden Handshake" these days?
They just come to you and dig up all your mistakes and just ask you to leave cos they are kind enough to foresee the mistakes you have made and not sue you for it...
I started up as a contract staff as well...they never treat you that well...(remember years ago there were SARS? perm staff were issued mask and contract saff were not given any!!! ridiculous right? as if SARS care whether you are perm or contract)
Anyway now I am a perm staff...don't see any much differences...
