Say you work in the company for a long time already. You know you are very important and you know alot of things and your boss thinks highly of you and he needs your help alot. Maybe you even know more things than him and he needs you to teach him.
But the company doesn;t pay you a high salary and benefits.
You have 2 choices now.
1. Go find a higher pay job than resign.
2. Tell your boss that your pay is low and than you will find a new job than leave soon. The purpose of doing so is hopefully he will try to make you stay by giving you pay increment, promotion, more benefits etc.
Which will you chose?
Firstly, you have to asked yourself on what is the expected salary that you are looking for and whether the job that you are doing is something that you like to do for the rest of the life.
If you are just concerned about your pay and have no passion about your job, it is better that you go to find a higher paid job to meet your rising living needs.
If you still love your job and you want a bigger pay packet, you can talk to your boss on how you can improve to handle more responsibilities so that he can justify your promotion when the appraisal period come along.
There is no right or wrong answer when asking for more money but never threaten your boss with a resignation.
Go for number 2 first. He will tell you, either
1) ok, we'll consider increasing your salary
2) i'm sorry in this economy, we're not doing that great, if you gotta go, then i can't really keep you.
no. 2 happened to me, so I started looking, and as soon as I found it, I was free to go with no hard feelings. You can always be forthright and honest with HR matters, unless your boss takes everything personal type.

I have a friend who knows alot of things in the company but the company only give her 1 time pay increment throughout her 5 years in the company.
She found another better job and resign. The boss try to make her stay. Promise her promotion etc but she still decide to leave
You can use the reasons on how you contribute to the company and your capabilities to back you up to ask for promotion/salary increment. JUst put it in a professional way. When you decide to do this, be prepared for depends on the boss, if he feels that he is willing to let you go then you have to be prepared to go. Probably to secure a job offer and then tell him so is the best. If he says yes, you can decide to stay. If he is willing to let you go then you can decide to go.
Better go find another job with higher pay, resign and forget about your company. Your boss might not even notice your absence when you are gone.
I have to agree tat no one is indispensable in a company.....it is extremely hard to believe that a staff would know more then the boss and the boss would have to rely on him.....either the boss is faking it so tat he can offload more workload for the staff to do...or he is plain STUPID.....in my company, i ensure tat anyone who wants to leave is welcome to do so....it is only a matter of time to retrain new staff....NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE IS INDISPENSABLE AT LEAST FOR ME.....

The boss is doing all the big things like attend meeting, negotiate with suppliers etc.
The staffs are the ones doing the daily work and the boss may not know how to do the daily job because he has no time to learn so in this case the staff would know more things than the boss

x2. If u go, he will employ another new guy. If new guy good, he will pick up exactly where u left off, if bad, need more time only nia.
Because there will be always ppl who are also doing the exact same stuff u are doing. I remember a case, one guy started the whole project, he is the only one know the thing inside out, he thought he was indispensable, boasting that the company needs him but when he left, the new guy that company employed just took one week to know everything liao because they employed someone that is of the same calibre and experience.
Even high end research work, professors, researchers get replaced easily, so no one is really indispensable.
I tell you, fark up company, no need to stay loyal to them one. once find a better job and pay, quit. just serve 1 month notice and f off from there.

3. Find new job first then ask boss to +++ pay, boss will usually say "why must add pay?" or simply "no", then you can tell boss you're leaving and secretly hope that the boss will beg and plead with you to stay with him ... just like any other regular guy.
