Scenario:
Colleague quitting and your boss has assigned you to take over his work. Boss held a quick meeting with you and asked you how interested you are in this new area of work.
Boss says you have a couple of weeks to think about it, while you get some on the job training. But boss would still like to know what you think of this new job scope now. In the meantime, boss also warns that before they can get new personnel, whether or not you are interested, you still have to do the work.
Also assuming the following factors in your unknown new task:
How would you answer now, and a few weeks later?
Edit: By the way, boss says either you decide or management decides. If management decides, you know the answer.
"Do I have a choice?"
Definitely. But before they hire new people, you don't.

sure got choice
u can quit too.
Either way, you still have to do the work.
Think so much for what?
Like boss says, whether you like it or not, they will still get new personnel.
At the end of the day, it's what the boss wants, not what you want.
Just do what he wants.

there's a reason why he's the boss and you aren't

Take on the new task permanently?

If that's what the boss wants, yes.

Boss obviously wants that.

You realise now it is what he wants, not what you want, even though he asks you what you want?

Didn't realize it now, but I thought it would be nice to know if I could use the choice (if possible).
Let's face it, most bosses are dictators, there are no two ways about it.

The only choice you can exercise at work is: should I say "Yes" to the boss, or just nod in agreement.
Haiz
After you are comfy with the new job scope, talk to boss about your new resource requirements that has to be satisfied by financial resources.
That will be like some long long time later.
u receive $$$ from yr boss
拿人钱财, 替人消
understand ????
These days companies are fast to exploit staff.
You have to ask yourself do you like what your ex colleague was doing. Do you see any prospect from the job?
Up the salary! Don't be treated like buy one get two free!
Mayi, from your post, seems like your boss is an open-minded person and willing to discuss with you on your preference. That already is very good. Last time, my boss is "he decide" and he allocates, without even seeking the team's concensus or preferences.
This, in itself, shows his respect for you. I believe you are free to choose bah... and perhaps its he is also giving an opportunity to you to prove yourself, and allow you a chance to learn more stuff and increase your KPI. Possibly if you choose to do the new job and does it well, promotion may be around the corner. =)
Well, it really have to depends on how you find the new task. If you prefer your old task where you are used to everything, say no lor... If you like what you doing, just do it.
Hmmm... I think first you have to ask this boss whether you can try out this new job temporary first ba!
Since for the better of you and the boss,
-Taking taking the job temporarily enables you to experience whether this job is either too "difficult" or "easy" for you to take.
-Boss on the other hand, can use this chance to evally you!
And btw, if the job is...
Easy
-Good for you, you're getting a easier job and if you're forsaking ur previous job, then most probably you wun have a pay cut, else he'll have another person quitting the job!
-But if you have to keep your other job as well, you'll have to hint to the boss that now you'll be doing 2 persons job and lest he wishes for ONE person to quit leaving TWO jobs open, he would up your pay!
For the part about worrying your friends getting the job spread-ed to them, don't worry. When a employee has quit, the boss is worried about whether people will follow suit too, so if they do get the spread, the welfare will increase (salary la hahaha)
And if job is
Difficult and you accept
-Good for you too! If its difficult then the boss would have to adjust your pay to a higher level, one that fits to the previous colleague you have you know? haha and most prolly, not confirm la, you'll get a UPAY (Up Pay)
-Leaves a good impression to your boss, opens up more promotion aspects in the long run cause of you being so dependable!
Difficult and you reject
-Woah, haha you must understand that its ok to reject, if it does more harm and you can't really handle it, there's no point in doing it, you're going to get compared to that previous colleague of yours and end up getting Fired away...
-But note, you might gonna leave a bad impression to your boss. (its sad, but since the boss looked for you, the moment you either do a bad job or ject him, bad impression's a definite thing.) so please explain to him about what i've said in the first point yo!
BUT BUT BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY,
Haha see whether you like this job lol. i had a bloody difficult job in PR section last time, lol bloody difficult. i had to explain all those bloody things that no one understands to the big shots of those bloody mncs haha
But guess what? I love bloody things! Haha and before long, i heard positive things about me from other people and lol hahaha that sense of accomplishment!
So! Consider your feelings first before you make any decisions! What i've said may be obvious but i bet you, 9 out of 10 didn't give a damn to their feelings when they face requests from their boss.
